299 Crucible of Terror ( 1971 )

This  British  film  has  a  rather  muddled  plot  requiring  a  lot  of  clumsy  explanation  at  the  end  but  is  worth  catching  if  only  for  the  lovely  Cornish  scenery.

James  Bolam  is  John  Davies, an  art  dealer  under  pressure. His  drunken  friend  Mike  ( Ronald  Lacey )  steals  a  life-size  bronze  sculpture  from  his  reclusive  father  Victor  ( Mike  Raven ) which   John  sells  straight  away. John  persuades  Mike  to  introduce  them  in  the  hope  of  a  deal  and  takes  girlfriend  Millie  to  Victor's  strange  household  in  Cornwall  but  Victor  is  more  interested  in  Millie  than  money . In  the  meantime  members  of  the  cast  are  being  gruesomely murdered.

Mary  made  her  film  debut  in  a  Spanish  horror  film  The  House  That  Screamed   after  a  string  of  TV  appearances  including  a  regular  role  in  Freewheelers. She  last  appeared  in  the  final  series  of  Bread  in  1991. Information  about  her  is  pretty  scarce.

Beth  Morris   ( as  Jane  Clare )

Sex : Jane  is  pursued  and  groped  by  Victor

Death : Repeatedly  stabbed  in  the  back  by  MIllie/ Chai-Sen

This  was  Beth's  first  film  in  a  career  spent  mostly  on  TV. She  was  last  seen  in  Doctors  in  2004.  She  is  now  68.

Judy  Matheson  ( as  Marcia )

Sex : Marcia  is  Victor's  mistress

Death : Marcia  has  acid  thrown  in  her  face  by  Millie / Chai-Sen

Judy   had  a  good  career  on  film  and  TV  in  the  seventies  then  switched  to  voiceover  work. She  has  been  married  to  Douglas  Jarvis  since  1995. She  is  now  72.

Melissa  Stribling  ( as  Joanne  Brent )

Sex : Joanne  is  interested  in  John

Death : Survives - the  only  female  character  that  does

This  was  Melissa's  only  other  horror  film besides Dracula.

Me Me  Lai  ( as  Chai  Sen )

Sex : Chai-sen  was  Victor's  mistress

Me  Me  was  actually  Burmese  and  was  an  exotic  bit  part  actress  between  1970  and  1985. She  is  now  65.

298 Countess Dracula ( 1971 )

The  title  of  this  Hammer  offering  is  very  misleading. It's  based  on  the  real-life  Hungarian  Countess  Elisabeth  Bathory   who  was  no  relation  to  Vlad  the  Impaler  and  a  sadistic  murderess  rather  than  a  vampire.

Here, she  discovers  that  the  blood  of  virgins  will  temporarily  restore  her  beauty  and  sexual  appetite  and  enlists  her  servants  Dobi  ( notorious  ham  Nigel  Green )  and  Julie  ( Patience  Collier )  to  keep  a  supply  going  while  she  seduces  dashing  lieutenant  Toth  ( Sandor  Eles )  in  the  guise  of  her  own  daughter  Ilona  who  she  has  kept  captive  on  her  estate. That's  the  most  obvious  of  some  large  plotholes  but  it's  good  fun  with  a  terrific  career-best  central  performance.

Ingrid  Pitt  ( as  Countess  Elisabeth )

Death : Elisabeth  is  waiting  to  be  hanged  at  the  end  of  the  film

This  is  Ingrid's  most  famous  role  although  it's  not  actually  her  voice  that  we  hear.

Lesley-Anne  Down  ( as  Ilona )

This  was  one  of  17-year  old  Lesley-Anne's  first  films  after  making  her  name  as  a  teen  model. She  had  her  major  breakthrough  two  years  later  in  Upstairs  Downstairs. She  went  to  Hollywood  on  the  back  of  that  for  a  film  career  which  is  still  ongoing. She  is  now  63.

Andrea  Lawrence  ( as  Ziza )

Sex : Ziza  is  a  prostitute  who  goes  to  bed  with  Toth  but  he  has  brewer's  droop

The  busty  blonde  never  got  out  of  bit  roles  but  she  had  a  20  year  career. She  is  now  76.

Susan  Brodrick  ( as  Teri )

Susan  was  mainly  a  TV  actress  , active  until  the  early  eighties. She  is  now  72.

This  was  Nike's  last  horror  outing.

Hulya   was  apparently  a  genuine  Turkish  belly  dancer.

297 Burke & Hare ( 1971 )

Armitage  Productions  came  up  with  another  version  of  the  story  of   Edinburgh's  infamous  duo. They  also  seem  to  have  wanted  to  make  a  sex  comedy  set  in  a  brothel  and  the  two  barely  connect  in  this  confusing  film  which  seems  to  have  been  rather  roughly  edited. Derren  Nesbitt  and  Glyn  Edwards  play  the  murderous  scoundrels; Harry  Andrews  the  doctor  who  literally  turns  a blind  eye  to  them.

Francoise  Pascal   ( as  Marie )

Francoise  was  born  in  Mauritius  and  spent  time  in  both  Paris  and  London  growing  up. She  became  the   girlfriend  of  actor  Richard  Johnson  and  from  the  mid-seventies  was  mainly  seen  on  TV. I  remember  her  as  the  sexy  French  student  in  Mind  Your  Language. She  had  a  brief  sojourn  in  Hollywood  in  the  mid-eighties  but  soon  returned  to  London. She  was  out  of  the  public  eye  for  a  long  time  but  has  made  one  or  two  films  this  decade.

Yutte  Stensgard  ( as  Janet )

 Yutte  gets  to  strut  her  stuff  a  lot  in  this  one.

Dee  Shendery  ( as  Mrs  Burke )

This  is  one  of  only  three  screen  appearances  by Dee  who  was  born  in  Oxfordshire, She  is  now  75.

Caroline  Yates  (  as  Annie )

Christine  Pilgrim  ( as  Rosie )

Christine  disappeared  for  a  long  time  after  this  before  reappearing  in  The  Benny  Hill  Show  in  the  late  eighties. In  1992  she  emigrated  to  Canada  where  she's  appeared  in  one  woman  shows.

Lindsay  Marsh  ( as  Liz )

Sex : Liz  is  a  prostitute  caught  out  by  the  fire

Lindsay  had  a  few  more  busty  parts  in  the  early  seventies  before  disappearing  from  view.

296 The Brotherhood of Satan ( 1971 )

This  low  budget  US  horror  is  also  low  on  excitement  and  quality  too. Elements  of  Rosemary's  Baby  and  The  Midwich  Cuckoos  are  spliced  into  a  story  that  could  be  vaguely  interesting  were  the  film  not  so  poorly-paced  with  scenes  dragging  on  forever. It  also  suffers  from  not  being  able  to  deliver  the  special  effects  the  plot  requires, leading  to  confusion  about  what's  actually  happening.

Strother  Martin , the  only  name  actor  in  the  film  plays  the  town  doctor  who  is  also  a  Satanic  priest  kidnapping  children  to  steal  their  youth  for  his  elderly  coven. Ben  ( Charles  Bateman )  and  his  family  stumble  into  town  and  get  caught  up  in  the  grisly  events.

Ahna  was  originally  Anna  Nanasi  from  Hungary. She  worked  mostly  in  TV from the   mid-fifties  onwards  but  had  a  brief  moment  of  stardom  in  martial  arts  classic  Enter  The  Dragon. She  retired  at  the  end  of  the  seventies. She  died  from  injuries  recived  in  a  car  crash  in  2010  aged  66. 

Judy  McConnell  ( as  Phyllis )

Judy  too  was  mainly  a  TV  actress  , this  bweing  her  first  film. She  is  best  known  as  Sophia  Capwell  in  Santa  Barbara. She  is  still  working  with  a  role  in  this  year's  The  Bay. She  is  now  73.
