358 The Beast Must Die ( 1974 )

This  full  length  Amicus  feature  has  an  interesting  cast  with  a  pair  of  blaxploitation  stars  plus  Nazi-imitator  Anton  Diffring  joining  the  usual  British  thesps. It's  not  terribly  scary  but  well  acted  and  quite  original.

Tom  Newcliffe  ( Calvin  Lockhart )  is  a  millionaire  big  game  hunter  who  wants  to  add  a  werewolf  to  his  trophy  cabinet. He  invites  a  number  of  guests  who  he  suspects  may  be  lycanthropes  ( on  pretty  slender  evidence it  must  be  said )  to  his  mansion  and  then  announces  they  must  pass  a  number  of  his  "tests" , conveniently  explained  by  Prof  Lundgren ( Peter  Cushing ) a  lycanthropy  expert, before  they  can  leave.

Ciaran  Madden  ( as  Davina )

  The  Essex-born  actress   made  few  films  but  was  active  on  stage  and  TV  from  the  late  sixties  to  the  late  nineties  when  she  retired  to  concentrate  on  painting. She  is  now  75.

Death :  Shot  by  her  husband  after  turning  into  a  werewolf

Marlene's  character  provides  the  voice  of  sanity  in  the  film.

357 The Bat People ( 1974 )

This  US  film  has  some  decent  special  effects  but  it's  murderously dull  and  predictable

Dr  Beck  ( Stewart  Moss ) takes  his  wife  on  a  caving  expedition  and  ens  up  being  bitten  by  a  bat. This  starts  turning  him  into  a  murderous  man/bat . He  incurs  the  suspicion  of  Sgt  Ward  ( Michael  Pataki ) .

Marianne  McAndrew  ( as  Kathy  Beck )

Sex : Marianne  has  sex  with  her  husband

Marianne  was  married  to  co-star  Stewart  Moss  in  real  life. She  is  best  known  for  her  role  as  Irene  Molloy  in  Hello  Dolly. After  this  film  she  worked  exclusively  on  TV  and  retired  around  2000.

Pat  Delaney ( as  Ms  Jax )

Pat  was  John  Huston'  daughter-in-law. She  started  work  as  a  child  actress  in  the  sixties. She  never  achieved  stardom  in  her  own  right  but  was  working  on   TV  up  to  2004.She  is  now  60.

356 Abby ( 1974 )

This   film  has  been  described  as  the  blaxploitation  Exorcist  but  that's  going  a  bit  far. It's passable  but  doesn't  justify  its  length.

Abby  is  a  marriage  counsellor  who  becomes  possessed  by  an  African  deity of  spirituality  unwittingly  unleashed  by  her   father-in-law. Austin  Stoker  from  Assault  on  Precinct  13   stars  as  a policeman.

Sex : Abby  becomes  promiscuous  when  possessed

Carol  was  a  blaxploitation  regular  in  the  seventies. She  started  out  as  a  backing  singer  for  Bobby  Gentry  and  often  contributed  songs  to  the  soundtracks  of  her  films.. She  retired  at  the  end  of  the  seventies  and  has  enjoyed  some  success  as  a  writer.

355 The Wicker Man ( 1973 )

Its  horror credentials  may  come  down  to  just  the  one  scene  and  its  lustre  has  been  diminished  by  a  terrible  remake but  this  is  still  a  justly celebrated film  with  a  thoughtful  script , fantastic  performances  from  Edward  Woodward  and  Christopher  Lee  and  a  shocking  climax.

Sgt  Howie  ( Edward  Woodward ) is  a  repressed  Presbyterian  policeman  who  flies to  the  remote  island  of  Summer  Isle  to  investigate  reports of  a  missing  girl. The  islanders  are  unco-operative  and  he is  shocked to  learn  that  the lords  of  the  island, now  represented  by  Lee, have led  the  islanders  away  from  Christianity to  pagan  worship. But  much  worse is  to  come.

Britt  Ekland  ( as Willow )   

Sex : Willow  deflowers  a young  boy  brought  to  her  then  tries to  seduce  Howie  ( actually  something  of  a  plothole  since  Howie  needs  to  stay  a  virgin  and  she's  in  on  the plan )

Britt  used  a  body  double  for   her  dancing  scenes. Her  Scottish  accent  is  pretty  woeful

Ingrid  Pitt  ( as  Librarian )

Sex : Howie  interrupts  her  while  she's  masturbating  in  the  bath

Ingrid  slipped  to  third-billed  female  for  this  one  and  wouldn't  return  to  horror  for  another  12 years.

Gerry  Cowper  ( as  Rowan  Morrison )

Gerry  is  from  Fulham. Most  of  her  career  has  been  spent  on  TV  with a  four  year  stint  in  Eastenders  probably  the  high  point. She  is  now  59.

This  is  Fiona's  only  film. She  soon  put  acting  aside  to  become  a  TV  presenter .She  was  awarded  an  OBE  in  2014.

354 Vault of Horror ( 1973 )

Another  Amicus  portmanteau  offering  with  a  very  similar  premise  to  Tales  From  The  Crypt. This  has  a  good  cast  and  some  neat  shocks  but  as  always  the  characters  are  two dimensional  at  best.

Anna's  murderer  was  played  by  her  real-life  sibling  Daniel

The  Anglo-Persian  actress  started  working  in  the  late  sixties  and  worked  mainly  in  TV. She  retired  from  acting  to  travel  with  her  second  husband  , an  executive  director  of  Operation  Raleigh.

353 Lust For A Vampire ( 1971 )

This  is  the  one  I  was  missing  from  Hammer's  Karnstein  trilogy  and  like  the  others  offers  a  colourful  blend  of  blood  and  nudity. This  one  delivers  on  those  scores  but  there's  also  a  decent  narrative  thread  to  it  as  well.

L'Estrange ( Michael  Johnson ) is  a  successful  writer  travelling  in  Styria  whose  interest  in  the  Karnstein  castle  is  piqued  by  the  establishment  of  a  girls  finishing  school  there  run  by  Giles  ( Ralph  Bates )  and  Miss  Simpson ( Helen  Christie ). However. it's  the  newest  girl,  Mircalla,  who  catches  his  eye  and  she's  not  all  she  seems.

Yutte  Stensgaard  ( as  Mircalla )

Sex : Mircalla  has  lesbian  sex  with  Amanda  and  perhaps  with  Susan . She  has  oral  and  penetrative  sex  with  L'Estrange  and  has  an  orgasm.

Yutte  has  much  more  screen  time  in  this  one  although  not  much  dialogue

Suzanna  Leigh  ( as  Miss  Playfair )

Suzanna  looks  awesome  in  this  one.

Sex : Susan  initiates  a  lesbian  relationship  with  Mircalla. They  later  swim  in  the  nude  together

 Pippa  is  momentarily  nude  in  this  one  but  shot  from  a  long  distance  away.

Judy  Matheson  ( as  Amanda )

Sex : Amanda  has  lesbian  sex  with  Mircalla

Judy  clearly  didn't  the  scene  very  stimulating.

Sue  didn't  do  any  other  horror  films  but  was  a  regular  in  seventies  sex  comedies. She  retired  in  1981  after  an  ear  operation  left  her  facially  disfigured. She  is  now  74.

352 Theatre of Blood ( 1973 )

This  follows  on  from  the  two  Dr  Phibes  films  with  Vincent  Price  playing  an  old  ham  actor  ( not  too  much  of  a  stretch )  who  starts  murdering  a  circle  of  critics  in  Shakespearean  fashion  after  taking  their  words  a  bit  too  seriously.  It's  a  jolly  enough  piece  of  hokum  with  a  surprisingly  strong  cast, many  of  whom  don't  get  much  screen  time  and  some  poignant  glimpses  of   the  rundown  London  of  the  early  seventies.

Diana  Rigg  ( as  Edwina  Lionheart )

Death : Killed  by  a  blow  to  the  head  from  a  vagrant

Diana  is  a  much-loved  British  actress  who  made  her  name  in  the  sixties,  playing  Emma  Peel  in  The  Avengers  and  James  Bond's  ill-fated  wife  in  On  Her  Majesty's  Secret  Service. This  is  the  only  horror  film  on  her  c.v.. She  is  still  very  active  at  79.
