416 Piranha (1978)

 This  enjoyable creature  feature  makes  no  secret  of  its  debt  to  Jaws ; Steven  Spielberg  liked  the  film  which  warded  off  the  threat  of  legal  action. Brad  Dillman  and  Heather  Menzies  play  the  mismatched  couple  who  inadvertently  release  a  swarm  of  genetically  modified  piranha  and  then  have  to  prevent  them  munching  their  way  through  a  summer  camp  and  holiday  resort. Joe  Dante's  taut  direction  and  a sense  of  humour  in  the  script  make  this  more  than  just  a  rip-off.

Heather Menzies  ( as Maggie )

Heather  found  instant  fame  as  one  of  the Von  Trapp  children  in  The  Sound  of  Music   and  struggled  to  make  the  same  impact  as  an  adult  actress. She  worked  mainly  in  TV  most  notably  in  Logan's  Run. At  the  end  of  the  eighties  she  retreated   into  private  life  with  actor Robert  Urich  and  their  children. After Urich's  death  in  2002  she  worked  for  cancer  charities  but  succumbed to  brain  cancer  herself  in  2017.

Barbara  Steele ( as  Dr  Mengers )

Belinda  Balaski ( as Betsy )

Belinda  had  already  amassed a  number  of  screen  credits  since  1974  and  became  a  regular  in  Joe  Dante  films. In  later  years  she  concentrated  more  on  running  her  drama  school  but  still  popped  up  occasionally, most  recently  in  2018.

415 The Comeback (1978)

 Another film  from  Peter  Walker, this  has  a  very  Hammer  Horror  feel  to  it  although  they  had  nothing  to  do  with  it. The  Comeback  stars  country  singer Jack  Jones  as  a  rock  singer  making a  comeback  after  a  messy  divorce. He  moves  into  a  manor  house  while  recording  his  next  album  but  is  disturbed  by  strange  goings  on. The  plot  completely  unravels  if  you  think  too  much  about it  and  Jones  can't  act  but  it's  quite  fun  nonetheless.

Pamela  was  born  in  New  Zealand but  started  acting  in  Australia. She  came  to  England  in  1976  and  found  regular  work  in  TV . She  made  her  name in  Not  The  Nine  O  Clock  News  in  the  early  eighties  but  her  comedy  work  after  the  series  was  not  so  well  received. In  the  late  eighties she  decided  on  a  career  change  and  studied to  become  a  clinical  psychologist. She  has  been  married  to  comedian  Billy  Connolly  since  1989.

Holly  Palance ( as  Gail )

Penny  Irving ( as  girl  singer )

This  was  June's  first  screen  role and  she  continued  in  bit  part  roles  until  This  Is  Spinal  Tap  in  1984. She  then  had  a  regular  role in the  science  fiction  series  V.  She  seems  to  have  retired  after  2001.

414 Martin (1978)

 George  Romero's  next  film  was  about  a  teenage  vampire living  in the  present  day. It  has  a  low  budget  grimy  look  and  not  many  laughs  but  it  is  a  more  thoughtful  take on  vampire  legends.

Christine Forrest  ( as  Christina )

Sex : Christina  is  sleeping  with  her boyfriend

Christine  was  George  Romero's  girlfriend  and  the  part  was  specifically  written  for  her. They  later  married  though  divorced  in  2010.  Christine's  screen  appearances  were  sporadic  but  she  is  still  active  as  a  producer.

Sara  Venable ( as housewife)

Sex :  She  is  having  sex  with  her  lover  when  Martin ambushes  them

Sara  had  one  film  role  before  this   but  little  is  known  about  her.

Francine Middleton ( as  train victim )

Francine  was  a  former  Playboy  Bunny  who  made  her  film  debut  in  Joe in  1970.

413 The Manitou (1978)

 This  moderately  entertaining  slice  of  hokum  has  Tony  Curtis  as  a  fake medium  trying  to  save  his  ex-girlfriend  from  an  old  Indian  witch  doctor  growing   on  her  back. It's  a  bit  slow  to  get  going  then  the  special  effects  crew  are  let  loose  for  a  big  climax.

Susan  Strasberg (as  Karen )

Sex : Karen  is  topless  during  the  final  confrontation

Susan  was  the  39-year  old  daughter  of  famed  actingh  coach  Lee  Strasberg  and  had  a  long  string  of  TV  and  film  credits  .She  worked  in  film, TV  and  the  theatre  without  achieving  major  stardom. She  died  of  breast  cancer  in 1999.

Stella  Stevens  (as  Amelia )

Stella  was  also  39  and  vastly  experienced. A  former  Playboy  model, she  already  had  a  log  string  of  films  behind  her  most  memorably  perhaps in  The  Poisedon  Adventure. In  the  eighties  she  worked  mainly  in  TV  with  a  leading  role  in  Flamingo  Road, Her  career  was  curtailed  by  Alzheimer's  disease  and  she  died  in 2023.

Anne  Newman  Baccal (as  Nurse)

Anne  Marie  was  a  bit  part  actress  who  worked  mainly  on  TV. Her  career  was  over  by  the  eighties.

412 Jennifer (1978)

 A  young  girl from  a strange  religious  minority  wins  a  scholarship  to  a  preparatory  school  where  bullying  (  and  worse ) by  a group  of  mean  girls  eventually  compels  her  to  use supernatural  powers  to  wreak a  dramatic  revenge. Hold  on,  haven't  we  been  here  before ? This  film  borrows  so  much  from  Carrie   it's  virtually  a  re-make  though  the  climax is  pretty  weedy  by  comparison. If  you  can  overlook  the  larceny it's  entertaining  enough.

Lisa Pelikan ( as Jennifer)

This  was only  the  second  film  role  for  Lisa. Her  film  appearances  have  been  sporadic  but  she  has  worked  steadily in  TV  and  the  theatre. She  was  married  to  actor  Bruce  DAvison  for  20  years. She  is  currently  teaching  in  New  York.

Amy  Johnston ( as Sandy )

Sex :  Sandy  boasts  about  it  but  nothing onscreen

Death : Incinerated  in  a  car crash

This  was  the  second  of  only  three  films  Amy made. She  worked  in  TV  up  to  1992  then  became  a  drama  coach. She  died  of  cancer  in  2021.

Louise  Hoven ( as Jane )

Louise  was  a  theatre  actress  from  Minnesota. Her  screen  career  finished  in  1982.

Georganne LaPierre (as Dee Dee )

Georganne  is  the  half-sister  of  Cher. This  is  one  of  only  two  film  roles  but  she  was  quite  active  in  TV up  to  1996

411 Dawn of the Dead (1978 )

 This  was  George  Romero's  follow-up  to  Night  Of  the  Living  Dead, ten  years  later  and  in  colour. Nothing  much  has  changed  as  zombies threaten  to  overrun  the  US. Two  TV  producers  and  two  police  marksmen flee  in  a  helicopter,  landing  on  top  of  a  shopping  mall  where  they  barricade  themselves  in  from  the  zombies. It  would  be  hard  to  miss  the  satirical  bent  as  zombies  blunder  around  the  mall  but  that  doesn't  sustain  the  two-hour  plus  running  time  nor  does  the  inexperienced  cast.

Gaylen Ross  ( as  Fran)

Starting  with  this  one, Gaylen  only  made  three  films , all  horror. Before  that  she  edited  a  poetry  journal. Subsequently she  became  a  documentary  film-maker  with  some  success.

410 The Medusa Touch (1978 )

 More  telekinesis  here  but  this  Anglo-French  film  is  much  better  than  The  Fury.. Richard  Burton  plays  John  Morlar, a  misanthropic  nihilist writer whose  head  is  caved  in by  an  unseen  assailant  but  he  clings  on  to  life. A  visiting  French  detective becomes  convinced  that  Morlar  can  create  disasters  by  force  of  will. Told  mainly  in  flashback, the  film  unwinds   the  mystery  slowly  but  ratchets  up  the  tension  to  a  very  bleak  conclusion.

Marie -Christine  Barrault  ( as Patricia)

Marie-Christine  is  a  distinguished  French  actress who  was  nominated  for  an  Oscar  for  Cousin Cousine  in  1975. Not  being  fluent  in  English ( though  you  wouldn't  know  it  here )  she  preferred  to  work  in  French  films  and  more  recently  the  theatre.

Frances Tomelty ( as Nurse )

This  was  only  the  second  film  role  for  the  Belfast-born  actress  who  works  mainly  in  TV  and  the  theatre. She  is  still  best  known  for  being  the  first  Mrs  Sting.
