222 The Curse of the Living Corpse ( 1964 )

This  is  an  independent  low-budget  film and  it  often  shows.  The  script  barely  makes  sense    but  it  is  worth  watching  for  the  young  Roy  Scheider  in  the  leading  role.




Rufus  Sinclair  is  a domestic  tyrant  subject  to  cataleptic  trances  and  hence  has  a  fear  of  being  buried  alive. He  apparently  dies  and  the  family  hasten  to bury  him  only  to  discover  that  his  will makes  their  inheritance  dependent  on  precautions  which  they  neglected  and  prophesies  a  horrible  death  for  each  one  of  them. Soon  a  masked  figure  begins  fulfilling  those  predictions.


Margot  Hartman  ( as  Vivian  Sinclair )

Margot   made  a  handful  of  film  appearances  before  retiring  in  the  late  sixties. She  made  an  unexpected  comeback  after  thirty  years  and  her  last  appearance  in  2003  was  in  the  film  Descendant  for  which  she  actually  wrote  the  script.


Candace  Hilligoss  (  as  Deborah  Benson )

This  is  a  rather  disappointing  appearance  from  the  star  of  Carnival of  Souls.  Candace  plays  an  uninteresting  innocent  who  has  little  to  do  except  scream  and  get  rescued.

221 The Damned ( 1963 )

This  little-known  Hammer film,   guest  directed  by  the  blacklisted  Hollywood  director  Joseph  Losey  is  more  science  fiction  than  horror  and  the  title  is  more  of  an  attempt  to  capitalise  on  the  success  of  the  superficially  similar  Children  of  the  Damned  than  an  accurate  indication  of  its  content. It's  a  bit  over ambitious  trying  to  present  two  unconvincing  romances  as  well  as  its  science  fiction  storyline  and  to  give  Oliver  Reed's  character  more  psychological  depth  than  he  needs.  It  also  features  possibly  the  worst  song  in  cinematic  history.


Alexander  Knox  plays  Bernard  ( no  surname; I  guess  Nigel  Kneale  wouldn't  play  ball )  a  government  scientist  running  a  top  secret  project  near  Weymouth  though  that  doesn't  stop  him  encouraging  his  sculpting  mistress  Freya  ( Viveca  Lindfors ) to  vacation  next  door. Meanwhile  an  American  tourist  Simon  Welles  ( Mcdonald  Carey )  is  lured  by  an  attractive girl,  Joan,  into  an  ambush  by  her  brother  King  ( Oliver  Reed )  and  his  gang  of  bikers. She  then  looks  him  up  against  King's  wishes  and  his  pursuit  drives  them  into  discovering  the  shocking  secret.

220 Twice-Told Tales ( 1963 )

Vincent  Price  must  have  been  a  serious  workaholic  the  rate  at  which  he  churned  these  out. This  is  another  portmanteau  film  comprising  three  stories by  Nathanael  Hawthorne. I don't  know  about  twice  but  they're  very  laboriously  told  and  at  nearly  two  hours  the  film  is  far  too  long.

In  the  first  story,  Price  plays  Alex, an  old  friend  of  Karl  ( Sebastian  Cabot )  who  discovers  that  a  dripping  liquid  has  preserved  the  corpse  of  Karl's  fiance  who  died  on  the  eve  of  their  wedding  thirty-eight  years earlier. In  the  second,  he's  a  mad  scientist who's  keeping  his  daughter  close  by  making  her  poisonous  to  touch. In  the  third,  he's  a  newly-wed  returning  to  his  ancestral  home  despite  a  family curse  on  the  property.

Beverly  Garland ( as  Alice  Pynchon )

Beverly  was  a  very  successful  TV  actress  whose  film  career was  a  bit  disappointing. She  had  a  long  stint  as  Kate  Jackson's  mum  in  The  Scarecrow  and  Mrs  King.  In  later  life  she  combined  acting  with  running  a  hotel. She  died  in  2008  aged  82.

Mari  Blanchard  ( as  Sylvia  Ward )

Sex : Mammoth cleavage

Death : Originally poisoned  then  turns  into  a  skeleton  when  the  liquid's  effects  wear  out

Mari  was  working  mainly  in  TV  by  this  point  having  been  something  of  a B-movie  queen  in  the  fifties. Ill  health  forced  to retire  in  the  late  sixties  and  she  died  in  1970  aged  47.

Joyce  Taylor  ( as  Beatrice  Rappacini )

Death : Commits  suicide  by  taking   a  lethal  potion.

|\Joyce  was  from  a  working  class  background  and  started  out  as  a  singer. She  was  signed  by  Howard  Hughes'  RKO  Pictures  but he  rarely  used  her. She  did  more  TV in  the  sixties  before  retiring  on  marriage  to  a stockbroker. She  is  now  84.

219 The Terror ( 1963 )

The  story  behind  how  this  film  got  made  is  more  entertaining  than  the  movie  itself. Roger  Corman  saw a  chance  to  shoot  another  film  before  the  sets  for  The  Haunted  Palace  and  The  Raven  were  taken  down  and  persuaded  Boris  Karloff  to  film  some  disconnected  scenes  in  a  couple  of  days. He  then  filled  out   the  story with  the  other  actors  available and  it   just  about hangs  together  and  produces  a truly  shocking  ending.

Jack  Nicholson  plays  Andre  a  lost  Napoleonic  soldier  who  encounters  a  beautiful  but  strange  girl  called  Helene. She  is  said  to  be  in  thrall  to  evil  Baron  Leppe  ( Karloff )  and  Andre  sets  out  to  liberate  her

Sandra  Knight  ( as  Helene / Ilsa )

Death : She's  actually  been  dead  all  along  and  rots  on  the  spot  when  her  work  is  done.

Sandra  was  pregnant  with  Jack's  child  during  the  shooting  which  is  no  doubt  why  her  boobs  are   particularly  impressive  here.

218 The Kiss of the Vampire (1963 )

This  was  the  second  Hammer  vampire  film  without  Christopher  Lee  and  this  one  didn't  have  Peter  Cushing  either. Cushing  had  vetoed  the  original  black  magic  resolution  to  The  Brides  of  Dracula  so  it  was  re-cycled  here  to  provide  an  exciting  climax  to  an  otherwise  rather  routine  adventure.

Gerald  Harcourt  ( Edward  de  Souza )  and  his  new  wife  Marianne  arrive  at  an  inn in  Bavaria  but  are  immediately  befriended  by  suave  Count  Ravna  ( Noel  Willman )  and  his  family. However  Ravna  has  designs  on  Marianne's  neck  and  Gerald  has  to  team  up  with  mad  occultist  Professor  Zimmer  ( Clifford  Evans )  to  save  her.

Jacquie  Wallis  ( as  Sabena )

This  is  Jacquie's  only  substantial  film  role  and  she  disappeared  from  view  the  following  year. She  would  now  be  75.

The  petite  Scottish  brunette  was  a  popular  TV  actress  in  the  sixties  and  early  seventies  and  also  appeared  on  celebrity  panels. She  was  less  active  after  that  and  retired  in  1990  to  become  a  governor  of  Solent  University. She  is  now  73.

217 The Haunted Palace ( 1963 )

This  is  usually  counted  as  one  of  Roger  Corman's  Poe  adaptations  but  in  truth  he  merely  uses  a  Poe  poem  as  an  epigram  and  the  film  is  primarily  based on  an   H P  Lovecraft  story instead. It's  a  reasonable  effort  in  the  usual  Corman  style  but  the  narrative  isn't  always coherent.

Vincent  Price  initially  plays  Joseph  Curwen  a  black  magician  who  is  hypnotising  young  women  to  mate  with  a  fiend  he  keeps  in  the  cellar. The  villagers  of  Arkham  respond  by  burning  him  and  he  curses the  village  before  he  dies. A  century  later  his  descendant  Charles  Ward  ( Price ) innocently  returns  to  the  family  home  but  becomes  inhabited  by  the  spirit  of  his  ancestor  who  is  out  for  revenge.

216 Diary of a Madman ( 1963 )

Vincent  Price  again  in  a  non-Corman  picture  based  on  a  couple  of  Guy  de  Maupassant  short  stories. He  plays  a  widowed  magistrate  Simon  Cordier  who  has  a meeting  with  a  condemned  murderer  who  claims  his  actions  were  directed  by  a  malign  spirit, the  Horla. After  the  man's  premature  death,  Simon  finds  the  Horla  has  followed  him  home  and  begins  to  direct  his  actions.


It's  a  decent  story  but  a  bit  too  long  in  the  telling.

Nancy   was  a  popular  TV  actress  who  crossed  successfully  into  films  in  the  sixties. In  the  same  year  as  this  she  starred  as  Medea  in  Jason  and  the  Argonauts.  She   retired  upon  marriage  to conductor  Zubin  Mehta  in  1969. She is  now  82.

Elaine  Devry  ( as  Jean  Darville )

Elaine  was  originally  Thelma  Mahnken  and  had  been  Mrs  Mickey  Rooney  for  6  years  in  the  fifties.  She  was  a  former  model  who  had  a  moderately  successful  film  career  for  two  decades  with  an  unexpected  comeback  in  Heart  to  Heart.com   in  1999. She  is  now  87.
