This is a desperately dull vampire film that never catches fire despite the presence of Dracula's Dwight Frye as an evil henchman once again.
George Zucco plays Lloyd Clayton , a benevolent doctor who nevertheless has murdered his evil twin brother Elwyn ( also Zucco ). Elwyn comes back to life as a vampire to avenge himself on Lloyd. The confrontation scenes between the two generate some spark but otherwise the film drowns in a mire of bad acting. Unless I missed something, Nedrick Young as the young hero isn't supposed to be a zombie.
Mary Carlisle ( as Gayle Clayton )
Sex : No, although you could make a case for an incest subtext in Elwyn's targeting of her.
Death : Survives
Mary was born as Gwendolyn Witter in Boston, Massachusetts. She achieved fame by starring in three Bing Crosby films in the 1930s but her career was on the wane when she made this, her final film. She retired shortly after marriage in 1942 and later ran a beauty salon. At the time of writing, she is still alive aged 102.
