545 The Evil Dead II ( 1987 )

 Sam  Raimi  came  up  with  a  sequel to  his  directorial  debut  which  is  pretty  much a  rerun  of  the  first  film  with  a  bigger  budget. A  couple  of  overaged students  find  their  way  to  an  abandoned cabin  in  the  woods , play a  tape  of  an  incantation and  all hell  breaks  loose. Wild-eyed Bruce Cameron has  the  film  more  or  less  to  himself for  the  first  35  minutes  and  it's  pretty  exhausting  watching  him  screaming  and  thrashing  against  the  special  effects. The  second  half  of  the  film  isn't  quite as  manic and  just becomes  rather  dull  if  you've  seen  the  first  film  until  the  thoroughly  ridiculous  ending.

544 Angel Heart (1987 )

 Alan  Parker's gloomy adaptation of an  occult  novel  concerns  a  private detective Hary Angel (Mickey  Rourke )  hired  by  a  mysterious stranger ( Robert De Niro )  to  find  a  possibly  deceased  crooner who  owes him  some unspecified debt. The  trail  gets  progressively  darker the  closer  he  gets  to  the  truth and  the  .bodies pile  up. There  are  a  fair  amount of plot holes, not  least  that  Rourke  is too  young  for  his  back  story,  but  it  moves  at  a  good  pace and is  impressively  atmospheric  throughout.

Lisa Bonet ( as Epiphany )

Lisa  is  from San Francisco and began  acting  in  commercials at  the  age  of  11. She got  her  big  break on TV  in  1984  when  she  joined  The  Cosby  Show. This   was  her  first  film  role  and  the  controversy  over  her  nudity  forced  her  out  of  the  show  although  Bill  Cosby  fixed  her  up  with  a  spin-off  show  drolly  titled A  Different  World . She  married  Lenny  Kravitz  in 1987  and  was  a  major  influence  on  his  early  music. They  divorced  in 1993  by  which  time  her  career  was  on  the  slide  although  she  did pull  herself  up  again in 1998 with  Enemy Of  The  People. She  has  been  inactive  since 2017.

Charlotte Rampling  ( as Margaret )

This  was  Charlotte's  first  horror  film  since Asylum in 1972.

Elizabeth Whitcraft ( as Connie )

She  was  a  prolific  playwright  who  occasionally  took  film  parts  and  played  a  minor  character in The  Sopranos.

542 The Stepfather (1987)

 This  is  a  well-regarded neo-Hitchcockian thriller  about  a  man  insinuating  himself  into  families  and  then  murdering  them  when they fail to live  up  to  his  expectations. It  spawned  two  seyuels  and  a  remake. The  plot  twists  are  a  little  mechanical  in  places  but  generally  it's  very  good  with  an  outstanding  central  performance  from  Terry O Quinn.

Shelley Hack ( as Sue )

Shelley  was  born  in  Connecticut. She  became  a  teen fashion  model  and  rose  to  prominence  in  the  late  se3venties  as  the  model  for  the  top selling  Charlie  perfume. She  had  a  minor  role  in Annie  Hall  but  is  probably  best  remembered  as  Kate  Jackson's  replacement  in  Charlie's  Angels..She  did one  season  of  the  show, becoming  somewhat  scapegoated  for  the  drop  in  ratings. Nevertheless  it  kept  her  in  TV  and   some  film  work  for  the  next two  decades  before  retiring  at  a  time  of  choosing. In  recent  years  she  has been  heavily  involved  in  political  work particularly  in  Eastern  Europe  and  post - conflict  societies   promoting  the  values  of fair  elections  and  a  free  press.

Jill  Schoelen ( as Stephanie )

Jill  was  from  California  and  was  actually  22 when  she  made  this  film  though  she's  playing  a  16 year  old. She  made  her  film  debut in  1983  in  D.C Cab  but  this  was  the  first  in  a  run of  films , some  of  them TV movies, that  made  her  a  scream  queen for a time.  She  was  romantically  linked  with  both  Keanu  Reeves and  Brad  Pitt  but  neither  lasted  and in 1993  she  married  a  film  composer  and  retired  a  few  years  later  to  raise  a  family. In  2009  she  released  a  jazz  album.

Robyn  Stevan ( as Karen )

Robyn  was  a  Canadian actress  who  rarely  got  past bit  parts  in  films  but  was  quite  well  known  on  Canadian TV. She  retired in 2003.

541 The Kindred ( 1987 )

 With  a  good  cast  and  some  decent  special  effects, this should  have  been  quite  good . It  isn't , due  to  the  underdeveloped characters  and  a  nonsensical  script  which  never improves  on  its  confusing  and  irrelevant  opening  scenes. David  Allen  Brooks  plays  John  the young scientist  charged by  his  dying  mother with destroying  her  murky experiments. Rod  Steiger  is  the  evil   doctor  trying  to  stop  him.

Amanda Pays ( as Melissa )

Amanda  is  an  English  actress  who  started  out  appearing  in  pop  videos. She  made  her  film  debut  in  Oxford  Blues  in  1984  and  this  was  her  first  American  film  role. She  married  Corbin  Bernen in 1988  and  her  film  career  tailed off  in  the  nineties  as  she  raised  four  sons,  She  became  an  interior  designer  and  presents  a  show  on satellite TV but  hasn't  entirely  given  up  acting.

Her  screen appearances  have  thinned out  recently  and she might be on the point of retirement.

540 Zombie Nightmare ( 1986 )

 This  Canadian  shocker features only  two  zombies - or three  if  you  count  Adam"Batman" West's  wooden  performance  as  the  police  captain. Big  Tony, played by  heavy  metal also-ran John Mikl Thor, is  run  down  by  a  group  of  doped-up teens. His  grieving  moher , calls  up  a  conveniently  located  voodoo  priestess  to  resurrect  him  as  a  vengeful  zombie.  You  always  know  where  this  one's  going  but  it's  entertaining  enough.

Tia  was  born  Althea Janinaro in  Hawaii. She  changed  her  name with  her  sister's  nickname  and tribute  to actress Barbara  Carrera. She  started  out  as  a  teen  model  and  got  her  big  break  on  the   soap  General  Hospital. This  was  her  second  film  role. She  hit  her  stride  in  the  early  nineties with  Wayne's  World , True  Lies and  Rising  Sun.  She  also  enjoyed  a  hit  single  with  her  cover  of  Sweet's Ballroom Blitz. Her  star has  slipped  slightly  since  with  most  of  her  films  going  straight  to  video  but  she  has  remained  active  with reality TV  and  a  nude shoot  for  Playboy  in 2003.  

Linda  Singer ( as Maggie )

 This  Auussie  zombie  film  is  a  poor  effort  about  dead  soldiers coming  back to  terrorise  a  town  when  heir  monument  is  blown  up  to  make  way  for  a  theme  park. The  script  soon  loses  its  way, the  characters  are  paper  thin  and  the  zombie  make  up  is  risible.

Khym Lam ( as Yoshie )

Kym  was  born in Singapore but  the  family moved  to  Australia  when  she  was  seven. This  was  her  only  film  role  and  she  was  mainly  to  be  found  on  Aussie  TV. She  retired  in  1997  and  published  a  recipe  book  the  following  year.

 Clive  Barker's  second  screenplay concerned a  bloodthirsty  pagan deity let loose in  rural  Ireland. It  starts slowly  but  quickly  becomes  violent  and  gory and  could  be  recommended  bar  one  fatal flaw. It  shows too  much  of  the  monster which  is  quite  obviously  a  big  man in  a  rubber  suit , more  suited  to 70s  Dr  Who  than  a big  screen  chiller.

536 Link (1986 )

 This  British  horror  film  follows a  young American  student who  goes to  work  as  a  housekeeper/assistant  at  the  isolated  house  of  a  zooologist  (Terence  Stamp )  and  his  semi-domesticated  chimpanzees  ( though  the titular  character  is  clearly  an  orang-utan  but  of  course  he  doesn't  have  the  control over  them  that  he  imagines. The  film  is  over-long  for  its relatively  simple  premise but  the  scenery's  lovely  and  unsurprisingly  the  apes  steal  the  show.

This  was  Elisabeth's  third  film  role and  her  first  as lead  though  she'd  clearly  not  heard  the  old  adage  of  never  working  with  children or  animals. She  was  born in  Wilmington and  first  appeared  in  commercials. Despite some  high  profile "girlfriend"  roles,  she  did  not  attract  much  attention until  her  Oscar-nominated  role  in  Leaving Las Vegas in  1995. Her  career  has  been  steady  ever  since, juggled  with  raising  three  children by  husband  Davis  Guggenheim.

535 Gothic ( 1986 )

 Ken  Russell indulges in  some  literary  speculation  with  his  recreation of  the visit of  the  futue  Shelley's  to  the  Swiss  villa  of  Lord Byron in 1816 which  arguably  led to  the  creation of  Frankenstein and more  obliquely, Dracula. The  film moves at  a  hysterical pace, bombarding  you with grisly  visuals but  it's barely  coherent ( you could re-juggle  the  order  of  most  scenes without any  noticeable  effect )  and  unevenly  acted- Gabriel Byrne and Timothy Spall  ae  excellent;Julian  Sands  isn't.

Natasha Richardson ( as Mary Godwin)

Natasha  was  the  daughter of  actress Vanessa  Redgrave  and educated privately  despite  her  mother's supposed socialist  convictions. Though she  made  a  couple  of  uncredited  film  appearances  as a  child, this  was  her  second  film  role.. She  had  a  middling  film  and  TV  career  but  won  a  Tony  award  in 1998  for  playing  Sally  Bowles  in  Cabaret in 1998. She  married  Liam  Neeson  in 1998. She  died  in 2009 of  a  head  injury  sustained  during  a  ski-ing  lesson.

Myriam Cyr ( as Clare )

Myriam was  born  in  Canada  and  has  appeared  in  both  English  and  French  language  films.. This  was  her  film  debut. In  2007 she  published  the  monograph  Letters Of  A  Portugese Nun : Uncovering  the  Mystery Behind a 17th  Century Forbidden Love.

Pascal  was  a  modestly  successful TV actress  from London. This  was  her  only  film  role  and  she  quit  acting  shortly afterwards.
