210 Carnival of Souls ( 1962 )
Besides inspiring an early REM song, this film by one time only director Herk Harvey , has become a cult classic. It has bags of creepy atmosphere with the organ music almost a character in itself. If the twist ending isn't that much of a surprise, it's because subsequent films, The Survivor for one, have ripped it off.
Mary Henry, a young organist, is a passenger in a car involved in a bridge plunge. She is the only person to emerge from the water alive but her attempts to pick up her life are sabotaged by the frequent appearances of a cadaverous man ( played by Harvey himself ) that no one else can see. She also has sleazeball neighbour Linden ( Sidney Berger ) to fend off.
Candace Hilligoss ( as Mary Henry )
Sex : No
Death : Drowns in a car
This was Candace's film debut but she was an experienced stage actress. Her subsequent screen appearances were few and far between and ceased after appearing in Quincy in 1981. She is now 81.
