300 The Devil's Widow ( 1971 )

This  was  the  only  film  directed  by  actor  Roddy  McDowall  and  accounts  for  his  absence  from  the  second  film  in  the  Planet  of  the  Apes  franchise. Unfortunately  it's  not  very  good, over-long  and  far  too  slow to  get  going ; you  don't  even  know  it's  a  horror  film  for  the  first  hour. Unredeemed  British  fol  rockers  Pentangle  provide  the  soundtrack  giving  it  some period  charm  but  not  enough  to  make  up  for  its  other  deficiencies.

Ava  Gardener  plays  Michaela  Cazaret , a  wealthy  widow  with  a sinister major-domo  Ellroy  ( Richard  Wattis )  who  maintains  a  household  of  trendy  sycophants  including  gigolo  Tom  Lynn  ( Ian  MacShane ). An  innocent  young  vicar's  daughter, Janet,  stumbles  into  this  world  and  catches  Tom's  eye  but   Michaela isn't  going  to  let  go  of  him  that  easily.

Stephanie  was  a  former  model  who  started  getting  film  roles  at  the  start  of  the  seventies. Although  she  has  plenty  of  film  and  stage  credits  she's  most  famous  for  her  TV  roles  as  Rose  in  Tenko, the  titular  role  in  Connie  and  Sable  in  The  Colbys . In  2009  she  had  a  run  in  Coronation  Street  and   despite  turning  70  her  career   shows  no  sign  of  winding  down.

Sinead  Cusack  ( as  Rose )

Sinead   is  the  daughter  of  actor  Cyril  Cusack  who  stars  as  the  vicar  in  the  film. She  came  to  prominence  in  the  film  Hoffman  with  Peter  Sellers  in  1970. She  is  perhaps  best  known  as  Mrs  Jeremy  Irons  but  has  enjoyed  a  steady  acting  career  in  her  own  right. She  is  now  69.

Joanna  Lumley  ( as  Georgia )

Joanna  is  just  one  of  a  plethora  of  talented  British  actresses  wasted  in  nothing  roles  in  this  film. Joanna  had  a  string  of  TV  and  film  parts  from  the  start  of  the  seventies  but  really  made  her  name  as  Purdey  in  The  New  Avengers  in  1977. She's  still  a  hugely  popular  TV  star  though  she  does  more  presenting  than  acting  these  days. She  is  now  71.

Jenny  is  utterly  wasted  here; it's  hard  to  guess  why  she  agreed  to  do  the  film.

Madeline  Smith  (  as  Sue )

Madeline  has  a  bit  more  to  do  than  some  of  the  other  girls  but  it's  still  not  a  great  role  for  her.
