Brian De Palma's follow-up to Carrie certainly lives up to its title with its ferocious pace and over-the top violence. A still sprightly Kirk Douglas plays Peter Sendza government agent trying to regain control of his psychic son Robin from the spooks who have spirited him away. At the same time, an innocent young girl seeks help with her own psychic abilities and is gradually drawn into the same world. It's a little over-ambitious and suffers from a dearth of sympathetic characters but just about holds your attention to the end.
Amy Irving ( as Gillian )
Sex : No
Death : Survives
Amy graduated to the lead female role after Carrie.
Carrie Snodgress ( as Hester )
Sex : Hester sleeps with Peter
Death : Hester is mown down by a runaway car after Peter shoots the driver
Carrie's career peaked early with an Oscar nomination for
Diary Of A Mad Housewife in 1970. The following year she took a six year sabbatical to be with boyfriend Neil Young. This was her comeback film but she never regained that early momentum and worked mainly in TV up to her death from liver failure in 2004.
Fiona Lewis ( as Susan Charles )
Sex : Susan is sleeping with Robin to help control him
Death : Multiple haemmorrhages from being flung around the room by Robin's telekinesis
This was Fiona's first horror role since Dr Phibes Rises Again
Melody Thomas Scott ( as La Rue )
Sex : No
Death : Survives
Melody has a bit more screen time than in The Car but it's still a bit part.
Hilarie Thompson ( as Cheryl )
Sex : Cheryl is pregnant
Death : Survives (a rare reprieve for the "mean girl" character )
Hilarie was nearly 30 at the time of filming having been acting since the late sixties. She worked mainly in TV until 1988 when she retired on getting married.
Daryl Hannah (as Pam)
Sex : No
Death : Survives
I must confess that I didn't spot her first time round but this was the screen debut of 17 year old Daryl,. the start of a glittering film career which continues to this day.
