534 Witchboard ( 1986 )

 This  was  director  Kevin  Tenney's  directorial  debut  and  it  does  show  a  bit  in  the  pacing with  the  film  taking  an  unneccessarily   long  time  to  get  going.. The  film  concerns  a  ouija  board  and  its  malign  influence  on  a  young  woman  who  has  become  the  cause  of  estrangement  between  two  former  friends. It  does  improve  in  the  second  half  but  it's  still  pretty  average.

Tawny  ( real name Julie )  was  born  in  San Diego and  became  a  model. She  appeared  in  commercials  and  music videos  before  breaking  into  films in 1984. However  she  found  most  fame  through  her  association  with  Whitesnake, marrying  singger  David  Coverdale  and  appearing  in  a  number  of  their  videos  in  the  late  eighties. They  divorced in  1991  and  her  career  slowly  declined , appearing  on  reality  TV  shows  and  having  issues  with  substance  use. She  died  of  heart  failure in  2021 aged 59.

Kathleen Wilhoite ( as Zerabeth )

Kathleen  is  a  versatile actress with  a  long  list  of  credits  in film  and  TV. She  had  an  early  starring  role  alongside Charles  Bronson in  Murphy's  Law  but  has  largely  been  used  as  a  character  actress  in  film. On  TV  she  has  had  recurring  roles  in  L.A. Law, E.R. and Gilmore  Girls. She  is  a  musiciuan  who  has  released  two  albums  and  had  her  songs  featured  in  some  of  her  films.

533 Deadly Friend ( 1986 )

 This  1986  Wes  Craven  movie was  so  hacked  about  by  the  studio following  negative test  screenings  that  Craven  ended  up  disowning  it. It's  obvious  something's  amiss  with  the  sudden  changes  in  tone  from  touching family  drama  to  extreme gore-fest  and  back  again and  the  switch  in  antagonist  from annoying  robot ( that  doesn't die a  moment  too soon ) to  hot  babe. It's  largely  watchable though.

Kristy Swanson ( as Samantha )

Death : Dies twice, firstly from  head  injuries  after  falling  down  stairs  and  secondly  from  being  shot  by  police.

Kristy  was  born  in  California  and  started  appearing  in  commercials  aged  9. Anne  hails  from  Massachusetts . She  made  her  reputation as  a  stage  actress  and  made  relatively  few films,this  one  being  her  second. She  was  more  often  found  on  TV  with  recurring  roles  in  L.A. Law and Third Watch. She  retired in 2003.

532 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)

 Tobe  Hooper  returned  to  direct  this  belated  sequel to  his 1974 classic with  the  intent  to  make a  dark  comedy  rather  than  out  and  out  horror. It's  partially  successful  in  that but  the   basic  premise  remains a  little  too  grim  for  belly  laughs. Dennis  Hopper  takes  the  cheque  uncle  of  the  siblings murdered  in  the  first  film  but  the  real  star  is  its  film's only  female  character   who  establishes  a  bond  with  Leatherface when  not  screaming her head off.

Caroline Williams  ( as Stretch)

Caroline  is  from  Texas  and  came  to  film  relatively  late after  working  in  commercials  and  industrial  films. This  is  her  signature  film  and  she  susequently  made  a  career out  of  appearing  in  horror  sequels. She  has  had  supporting  roles  in  mainstream  films  and  TV  work  but  is  primarily  known  as  a  scream queen.

531 The Fly ( 1986 )

 David  Cronenberg  hit  the  jackpot  with  this  remake  of  the  1957 Vincent  Price  movie  The  Fly. This  time  round  Jeff  Goldblum  plays Seth  Brindle  the scientist  who  gets  genetically  mingled  wth  a  fly  and   Cronenberg  spares  nothing  in  depicting  his  gradual  transformation  into  an  insect. The  film's  make  up  duop  won  an  Oscar  but  everyone  involved   deserves  a  pat  on  the  back  for  this    entertaining  horror  classic,

Geena  Davis ( as Ronnie )

Geena  studid  drama  at  Boston University and made her  film  debut  with  a  small  role  in  Tootsie. This  was  her  fourth  film  and  the  start  of a  purple patch that  saw  her  win  a  Best  Supporting  Actress  Oscar for The  Accidental Tourist  and  nomination for Best  Acttress for  Thelma  And  Louise.  Her  career faltered  when  she  started  working  with third  husband  Rene  Harlin  particularly  the  box  office  disaster Cutthroat  Island. Since  then  her most  high  profile  film  role  has  been  the  mother  in  the  Stuart  Little  movies  and  she  has  worked  mainly  in  TV  garnering  awards  for  her  role  in  the  series Commander in Chief.

530 Jason Lives : Friday the 13th Part Vi

 Jason  lives again although  actually he doesn't, this being the point in  the  franchise  where  any pretence  that  he's  still  a  human  being is  abandoned after  his  Frankenstein-esque resurrection  in  the  opening  scene. Of  course  he's  up  to  his  old  tricks  again and  this  would  be  a  tedious affair  were  it  not  for  a  sharp  script with  knowing  humour.

Jennifer Cooke ( As Megan)

529 Maximum Overdrive (1986)

 This  is  almost  certainly the  worst Stephen King  adaptation , indeed in  the conversation for  worst film  in a number  of  categories, perhaps  because  he  directed  it  himself. Emilio  Estevez  plays  Bill, a  punk on probation working in a diner  when a  comet  causes  machines to  turn  aggressive  against  the  human  population. The  first  20 minutes of  carnage  is  actually  quite  inventive  but  as  soon  as  it  turns into  a  seige  movie, it becomes  unwatchable.  The  largely  unknown cast  grapple  with  a  witless  script that  largely  consists  of  shouting  insults  at  each  other although  it's  a  bizarre reference  to  Neville  Chamberlain  that  really  takes  the  biscuit. Awful beyond words.

Laura  Harrington ( as Brett)

Laura  is  from  Michigan and  got  her  first  film  role  in  1981.After  this  one , she  waorked  mainly in  TV  but  did  re-emerge in 1993  in  What's  Eating  Gilbert  Grape ? In 1999 , hr  contemporary  opera  Libretto  came  to  the  stage  and  she  retired  from  acting.

Yeardley Smith  (as Connie )

Yeardley started  acting  professionally  in  1982  and  this  was  her  thrd  film. That  has  sustained  her  for  nearly  40 years  but  she has  continued  to  work in  film, TV  and  the  theatre. She  is  also  an  independent  film producer.

 James  Cameron's  blockbuster  sequel  has  its  critics  and  it  certainly  is  very  different  in  tone  from  Ridley  Scott's  original  film but  on  its  own  terms  it's a  relentlessly  exciting action  thriller  with  some  memorably  sharp  dialogue.

She  has  not  appeared  in  anything  since 2019.

Cynthia  studied  sculpture in Rhode Island  then  moved  to   London  to  try  and  launch  a  music  career.  This  was  her  first  film role  but  she  failed to  capitalise  on  it  scoring  only  bit  parts  before  moving  out  of  the  business  in  the  nineties.

Colette  Hiller (  as  Ferro )

Although  born  in  America, Colette has  spent most  of  her  working  life in  Britain. Aliens  was  the  last  of  her  handful of film roles. Since  then  she  has  worked  for  the  BBC  on  documentaries  and  as  Creative  Director  of  SingLondon . responsible  for  a  number  of  civic  art  projects between 2007 and 2012.

527 Psycho III (1986)

 We  didn't  have  to  wait  so  long  for  the  third  Psycho movie. Norman  Bates   holds  the  fort  again , this  time  sharing  the  antiquated motel with  a  suicidal nun, Maureen  and  a  sleazy  rock wannabe, Duane. As  usual  people  start  getting  slashed  again  and  there's  a  fair  amount  of padding,including yet  another re-write of  Norman's  back  story  but  Perkins  keeps  it  watchable  both  as  actor  and  director.

Diana Scarwid ( as Maureen )

Diana Trained in New  York  and  started  getting  parts  on TV  in  the  late  seventies. In  1980 she  got  an  Oscar  nomination  for  her  third  film Inside  Moves then  the  following  year  won  the  Razzie  for  Worst  Supporting  Actress in Mommie Dearest.  On  the  big  screen  she  usually  had  supporting  roles  but  was  something  of  a  TV movie  queen. She  retired  at  the  end  of  the  noughties. A  devout  Catholic, Brinke  Stevens  doubled  for  her  in  the  bathroom  scene.

Juliette Cummins ( as Red )

Juliette  enjoyed  the  experience  of  working  with  Perkins.

Kat  was  coming  to  the  end  of  her  first  career  as  a  bit  part  actress here  but  she  had  already  written  the  screenplay  for  The  Patriot  and  made  her  directorial  debut  the  following  year  with  Stripped To Kill. She  made  her  mark  with  Poison  Ivy  in  1992 and  has  had  a  reasonably  successful  career  ever  since.

526 Poltergeist II : The Other Side ( 1986 )

 Most  of  the  original  cast  bar  the  ill-fated Dominique  Dunne, returned for  this  slightly  more  adult  sequel. It's  OK  but  the  special  effects  mask  a  weak  storyline and  there's  an  inevitable  lack  of  surprise.

JoBeth Williams ( as Diane )

525 Crawlspace (1986)

 This  creepy  tale about  a  voyeuristic (and more) landlord  Dr  Gunther ,is  more  famous for  the  behaviour  of  its  star  Klaus  Kinski  and  the  response  of  its  crew  than  the  contents. The  sleaziness  of  the  concept  is  offset  to  some  extent  by  a  slightly  campy  approach but  it's  Kinski's  performance  that  dominates  the  film.

Talia  Balsam ( as Lori )

Talia  is  the  daughter of  actor  Martin  Balsam. She  began  her  career  on  TV  with  parts  in  Happy  Days  and  Dallas  and  this  was  her  third  film.She  was  married  to  George  Clooney  between 1989 and  1993. Although Talia  has  a  considerable filmography  she  is  better  known for  her  TV  work  particuarly  in  Mad  Men from 2007 to  2014  in  which  she  starred  alongside  current  husband  John Shirley. Switching  to  acting, this  was  her  first  film. Although her  long film  career has  largely  consisted  of  bit  parts she  made  an  impression  in  Legally  Blonde  as  Reece  Witherspoon's  mother  and  she  has  dabbled  in  writing  and  directing  shorts.

524 Nomads ( 1986)

 European  exiles ( Pierce Brosnan, Lesley Ann Down and  erm, Adam Ant) take  the lead  roles in  this  silly and  rather  pretentious horror set  in L.A. Brosnan plays a  French ( cue  horrendous  accent ) anthropologist  who  dies  in  hospital  whereupon  the  female  doctor treating  him starts  reliving  the  last week of  his life. These  mainly  involve  trailing  a  group  of  street  punks and  making  tenuous  connections to  tribes  he  encountered  in his  earlier  travels.

Lesley-Anne Down ( as  Dr Flax )

This  was Lesley-Anne's first film  for  five  years following  the  disaster of  Sphinx. In  the  mean time  she  had restored  here  reputation  in  the  mini-series North And South

Anna-Maria Monticelli ( as Nicki )

Anna-Maria was  an  Australian  actress , mainly  on  TV and  this  was  actually  her  last  film. Down  has  suggested  she  was  having  an  affair  with  director  John McTiernan  at  the  time. She  wrote and  produced  two  screenplays  in  the  noughties  and  seems  to  have  retired  from  acting.

523 The Hitcher ( 1986 )

 This  is  a  well-regarded pyschological horror film  with  a  sequel  and  a  remake in  the  noughties. C  Thomas  Howell  plays  a  young  man  on  a  road  trip  who  encounters  a  muderous psychopath  played  by  Rutger  Hauer  who  wants  to  torment  rather  than  kill  him. It's  slightly  preposterous but  always  entertaining.

Jennifer Jason Leigh (as Nash)

Death : Torn  apart between a lorry and  its  load (offscreen)

Jennifer  is  the  daughter  of  ill-fated  actor  Vic  Morrow. Her  own acting  career began  on  TV  in  the  70s , breaking  into  film  in  1981 with  Eyes Of A Stranger. She  first  caught  the  eye in Fast Times At Ridgemont High  the  following  year. She  is  known  for  taking  challenging  roles  that other  actresses might  avoid . She  also  prefers to  work in  independent  films  coming  closest  to  stardom in  1992  with  Single White Female. Though  highly-regarded she  has  only  received  one  Oscar  nomination, for  The  Hateful  Eight in 2015.

522 The Blue Man (1985)

 It's  hard  to  believe  this  Canadian  horror  film  was  made  by  the  same  guy  who  made My  Bloody  Valentine. The  script  about  two  astral vampires  passing  from  one  body  to  another  to  preserve  themselves isn't  bad  but  it's  really  badly  made, with  poorly-lit  scenes , boom  mikes  appearing  and  dreadful  acting  from  the  male  leads.

Karen Black ( as  Janus )

Karen  is  the  biggest name  in  the  cast  but  it's hardly  one  of  her  best  roles.
