As this British film has no supernatural elements, it could be argued that it's a Dickensian crime drama rather than horror but it's got enough of the tropes to qualify, Besides it's excellent.
Boris Karloff stars as an eminent surgeon , Mr Bolton in the Victorian era disturbed by the amount of pain his patients suffer during operations. At the same time, he runs a clinic in a very dodgy neighbourhood, the Seven Dials. He becomes obsessed with finding a workable anaesthetic and this is taken advantage of by a criminal gang led by Black Ben ( Francis de Wolff ) and his sinister henchman, Resurrection Joe ( Christopher Lee ) who are operating a bodysnatching racket.
Betta St John ( as Susan )
Sex : A relationship with her cousin played by Francis Matthews is strongly implied at one point.
Death : Survives - in fact Susan is not in danger at any point in the film.
Betta was originally Elizabeth Streigler from California. She was a successful child actress and also a big star in musical theatre. She retired in the mid-sixties and is no 87.
Adrienne Corri ( as Rachel )
Sex : No
Death : Survives
Adrienne was the daughter of Italian immigrants to Scotland and went to RADA. She had a good 30 year career including appearing in A Clockwork Orange and was last seen in an episode of Lovejoy in 1996. She died a year ago aged 85.
Yvonne Romain ( as Roma )
Sex : Roma may be a prostitute and appears in two scenes in her underwear. Joe tries to rape her in a surprisingly graphic scene for the time.
Death : Presumably survives but her fate is left in the air
Yvonne had been acting since her teens. Not long after she made this film, she married Anthony Newley's writing partner Leslie Bricusse and eventually retired in the early seventies. She is now 79.
