409 The Fury (1978)

 Brian  De  Palma's follow-up to  Carrie  certainly lives  up  to  its  title  with  its  ferocious  pace  and  over-the  top  violence. A  still  sprightly  Kirk  Douglas  plays  Peter  Sendza  government  agent  trying  to  regain  control  of  his  psychic  son  Robin from  the  spooks who  have  spirited  him  away. At  the  same  time,  an  innocent  young  girl seeks  help  with  her  own  psychic  abilities  and  is  gradually  drawn  into  the  same   world. It's  a  little  over-ambitious   and  suffers  from  a  dearth  of  sympathetic  characters but  just  about  holds  your  attention  to  the  end.

I  must  confess that  I  didn't  spot  her  first  time  round   but  this  was  the  screen  debut  of  17  year  old  Daryl,. the  start  of  a  glittering  film  career  which  continues  to  this  day.

408 The Evil (1978)

 This  is  quite  an  effective  shocker. A  group  of  volunteer  students  help  a  married couple  of  doctors  to  renovate  an  old  house  for  a  drugs  centre. When  disturbing  events  start  occuring  they  find  they  are  unable  to  get  out.  As  the  party  are  despatched  one  by  one, the  film  builds  nicely  to  a  suitable  climax.

Joanna Pettet   ( as  Caroline )

Born  in  Britain, Joanna  had  some  good  film  roles  in  the  sixties  but  was  mainly  working  in  TV  by  the  time  this  came  out. She  retired  from  acting  in  1990. She  was  close  friends  with  Alan  Bates  and  was  chief  beneficiary  in  his  will.

Cassie  Yates ( as Mary )

Cassie  was  mainly  a  TV  actress  but  appeared  in  some  notable  films  around  this  time. She  retired  in  the  nineties  but  came  out  of  retirement  for  a  film  in  2018.  

Lynne  Moody (as  Felicia )

Lynne  too  was  mainly  a  Tv  actress  with  roles  in  Roots  and  Knots  Landing. She  seems  to  have  retired  at  the  end of  the  noughties.

At  31, Mary  was  a  bit  old  to  be  playing  a  student. She  came  to  acting  late  having  previously  been a  rider.Her  acting  career  lasted  barely  ten  years  and  she  dropped  out  of  public  life  after  1983.

407 The Toolbox Murders (1978)

 This  low  budget  "slasher" gained  notoriety  through  being  branded  a  "video  nasty"  in  the  Uk  a  few  years  later. While  it's  pretty  violent  to  start  with , for  the  most  part  it's  a  very  boring kidnap  drama  which  overstretches  the  limited  talents  of  Bonanza's  Cameron  Mitchell. It  has  its  moments  but  it's  mostly  dross.

Pamelyn Ferdin ( as  Laurie )

Pamelyn  was  playing  a  15  year  old  here but  was  actually 18

406 Tentacles (1977 )

 This  US-Italian  made  creature  feature  has  a  surprisingly  strong  cast  to  say  it's  besically  Jaws  with  a  giant  octopus  replacing  the  shark, Bo  Hopkins  plays  the  marine  expert  charged  with  tackling  the  troublesome  beast. A  passable  effort.

Della  Boccardo ( as  Vicky Gleason )

Della  was  a  hard-working  Italian  actress with  many  films  to  her  credit, From   the  mid  eighties onwards  she  chose  to  work  mainly  in  the  theatre.

405 The Sentinel ( 1977)

 This  occult  thriller   from  Michael Winner,  about  a  girl  in  a creepy  apartment  block  has  echoes  of  Rosemary's  Baby. It's  nothing  special  but  its  star  is  always  worth  watching.

Cristina  Raines ( as  Alison )

Sex : Alison  is  a  married  man's mistress

Death : Survives

Cristina  was  born  in  The  Phillipines. She  began  working  life  as  a  model  but  appeared  in  a  number  of  decent  films  in  the  seventies. She  found  greatest  fame  on  TV in  the  eighties  with  leading  roles  in  Centennial  and  Flamingo  Road. She  retired  in  1991  to  take  up  a  career in  nursing.

Beverley D'Angelo  ( as Sandra )

Death : She's  already  dead  and  is  just  an  apparition

This  was  Beverley's  second  film  role. She  found major  success  alongside  Chevy  Chase in  the  Vacation  franchise  and  has  worked  solidly  ever  since.

404 Ruby ( 1977 )

This  movie  received  poor  reviews  but  is  actually  quite  an  effective  chiller. Piper  Laurie  is  the  titular  Ruby , a  former  gangster's  moll  who  took  over  after  setting  up  her  lover to  be  killed  in  the  thirties. Twenty  years  on,  the  gang  now  run  a  drive-in cinema  but  then  they  start  dying  one  by  one in  macabre  circumstances.

Janit  Baldwin (as Leslie )

Janit  had  a  12  year  acting  career up  to  1984  then  became  a  successful  fashion  designer  specialising  in  leather  handbags  and  accessories.

403 Rabid ( 1977)

 This  was  David  Cronenburg's  second  film and  features  some  of  the  same  cast ( and  same  ideas )  as  Shivers. A  girl  is  badly  injured in  a  motorcycle  accident  just  outside  a  plastic  surgery  facility  and  is  treated  with  experimental  skin  grafts. When  she  comes  to, she  has  a  sort  of  carnivorous  penis  living  in  her  armpit  and  needs  to  feed  on  blood  to  survive. Her  victims  devekop  a  form  of  rabies  and  mayhem  ensues. The  acting  is  terrible but  it's  got  good  pace  and  decent  shocks.

Marilyn  Chambers  ( as  Rose )

Sex : Rose  uses her  allure  to  ensnare  most  of  her  victims

Death : Rose  is  attacked  by  one  of  her  own  victims  and  this  leads  to  her  death. It's  not very  clear  how.

Marilyn  was  a  successful porn  actress looking  to  cross  over  into  mainstream  films.  This  never  really  happened  for  her  and  she  had  returned  to  porn  by  1980. Marilyn  had  problems  with  both  the  law  and  substance  abuse  but  retained  a  high  profile  in  the  sex  industry. She  died  of  an  aneurysm in 2009  aged  57.

Terry Schonblum ( as  Judy )

This  was  Terry's  own  acting  role.

Susan Roman ( as Mindy )

This  is  one  of  Susan's  few  onsacreen  roles   but  she  is  a  hugely  successful  voice  actress.

402 Drive-In Massacre ( 1976 )

 It  would  be  charitable  to  call  this  a  C-movie. A  mysterious  swordsman  is  chopping  people  up  at  a  drive-in theatre. For  the  bulk  of  the  movie  two  fat  cops  investigate  red  herrings  including  an  irrelevant  hostage situation that  takes  up  10  minutes. At  a  concise  74 minutes  it's  still  far  too  long.

Verkina Flower ( as Girl in warehouse )

Sex : No

Death : Survives

Verkina  is  the  daughter  of  actor  George  Flower who  appears  in  the  movie  as  her  abductor. Her  acting  career  petered  out  in  the  early  eighties  but  she continued  to  work  in  the  film  industry  up  to  2005  as  a wardrobe  mistress  and  set  designer.

Katharine  Barkley (as Kathy)

Sex : Kathy  allows her  guy  to  take  her  bra  off  then  says  no.

Although  she  made  her  film  debut  in  Pat  Boone's  Christian  vehicle  The  Cross  And  The  Switchblade, Jacqui  worked  mostly  in  exploitation  movies  in  the  seventies. However  she  earned  respectability away  from  the  camera  and  is  now  a  film  producer.

Sandy  Carey ( as  Lori)

Death : A  sword  impales  both  her  and  her  lover

Sandy  also had  a  busy  career  in  exploitation  movies  but  never  managed  to  escape  them.

Janus Blythe ( as Alan's date )

A  nothing  part  for  Janus  but  at least  she  has  a  decent  death  scene.

401 The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

 This  was  Wes  Craven's  second  film , not  quite  as  nasty  as The  Last  House  On  The  Left but  still  fairly  unpleasant. Three  generations  of  the  Carter  family  get  lost  on  a  caravan vacation  and  find  themselves  at  the  mercy  of  a  family  of  cannibalistic hillbillies. 

Susan Lanier ( as Brenda )

Sex : Brenda  is  raped ( not  explicit )  by  one  of  the  hillbillies.

This  was  Susan's  first  film  role  after  a  string  of  TV  appearances. She  now  combines  acting (mainly  TV  roles ) with  photography. She  was  married  to  country  singer  Delaney  Bramlett  up  to  his  death  in 2008.

Dee  Wallace ( as Lynne )

Death : Shot  twice  at  close  range  by  one of  the  hillbillies

As  we'll  see , this  was  the  first  in  a  string  of  horror  roles  for  Dee  but  she  also  starred  in  E.T. She  remains  a  busy  actress  as  well  as  a  motivational  speaker  and  author.

400. Full Circle aka The Haunting of Julia (1977)

 This  psychological  horror  film  is  an  Anglo-Canadian  ptroduction  about  a  bereaved  mother  suffering  the  attentions  of  a  different  child in  her  new  home. With  echoes  of  Rosemary's  Baby  and  Don't  Look  Now,  this  one  is  slow  to  get  going  but  improves  markedly in  the  latter  half.

Mia  Farrow  ( as  Julia )

Death :  Has  her  throat  slit  with  the  cymbals  on  her  child's  toy.

Sophie  Ward ( as Kate )

399 The Car (1977)

 Sandwiched  between  Duel  and  Christine  was  this  less  than  rapturously  received film  about  a  demonic  diverless  car  terrorising  a  small  town in  Utah. The  scenes  with  the  car  itself are  quite  exciting  but  when  it's  ofscreen, the  film  slows  to  a  snail's  pace  with  unnecessary  pregnant  pauses, redundant  characters  and  uninteresting  subplots.  

Kathleen Lloyd ( as  Lauren )

Sex : Lauren  is  mistress  to  the  main  character  and  a  schoolteacher who  relishes  being  drawn  naked  by  a  pupil.

Death : Lauren  is  mown  down in  her  own  home  by  the  car.

Kathleen  was  primarily  a  TV  actress  with  recuuring  roles  in  Magnum  and  Hill  Street  Blues. She  seems  to  have  retired  early  in  the  noughties.

398 Alien Prey aka Prey 1977

 

This  little-known  British  film  is  actually  a  horror/sci-fi  take  on  D H  Lawrence's  tale,  The  Fox. where  Andersen, an  alien  in  human  form  intrudes  upon  a   young  lesbian  couple living  in  the  countryside. It's  an  interesting  premise  let  down  by  terrible  acting, especially  Sally  Faulkner, and  pound  shop  special  effects.

Glory  Annen (as Jessica ) 

Sex : Jessica  has  lesbian  sex  with Jo  and  hetero-sex  with  Andersen

Death : Jessica  has  her  throat  ripped  out  as  part  of  Andersen's  orgasm.

Glory  was  a  Canadian  actress who emigrated  to  London  in  the  late  sixties  to  further  her  acting  career. She  worked  steadily  in  film  and  TV  throughout  the  seventies  but  from  1982  worked  more  as  a  casting  director  for  commercials. From  1992  she  was  the  partner  of  racehorse owner  Ivan  Allen, a  relationship that  ended  in  an acrimonious  court  case. In  Later  years  she  suffered  from  diabetes  and  had  to  have  a  leg  amputated. She  died  in  2017  aged  64.

Sally  Faulkner ( as  Jo )
