456 Funeral Home (1980)

 This  low  budget  Canadian  shocker  keeps  you  guessing  for  a  while  before  revealing  itself  to  be  a  rip-off  of  Psycho. A  teenager  arrives  in  a  small  town  to  help  her  grandmother  run    a  guest  house where  she  and  her  absconded  husband  used  to  run  a  funeral  business. Spooky  noises  from  the  cellar  and  inexplicable  disappearances point  to  something  strange  going  on  there. Decent  performances and  an  intelligent  script  make  it  a  watchable  offering.

455 The Hearse (1980)

 This  movie  decently  acted  and  filmed  but  the  plot  is  all  over  the  place. It  doesn't know  whether it's  a  haunted  house film ,   an  occcult  thriller  or  a  killer  car  movie  and  ends  up  just  swirling  the  pot  around  and  hoping  something  digestible  emerges. A  teacher  retreats  to  a  country  house to  get  over  a  divorce  but  the  locals  are  largely  unfriendly and  spooky  gooings  on  start  happening  sometimes  involving  a  hearse. Is  Tom  the  handome  stranger  her  salvation ?  This  film  is  very  low  on  shocks  and  the  ending  is  very  lame. 

Trish Van Devere ( as  Jane )

Trish  came  from  a  wealthy  New  Jersey family  but  had  a  strong  philanthropic urge  co-founding  the  Poor  People's  Theatre  Company  and  funding  it  from  her  TV  success. In  her  third  film The  Last  Run, she  starred  alongside  George  C  Scott  who  she  married  shortly  afterwards. They  worked  together  on  a  number  of  films. Her  screen  appearances  became less  frequent  as  Scott's  health  declined  and  she  retired  following  his  death  in 1999.

454 Humanoids From The Deep ( 1980 )

 This  picture  from   Roger  Corman's  company  attracted  a  lot  of  criticism  for  the  extra  nudity  inserted afrer  most  of  the  cast  thought  the  film  had  wrapped. Essentially  it's  an  update  on 50s  B-movies  like  The  Creature From  The  Black  Lagoon  though  there's  a  fair  amount of  Jaws  here too  and  the  "shock"  ending  is  a  direct  crib from  Alien,  It  does  actually  need  the  sexual  element  because  without  it  the  film  would  be  extremely  pedestrian.  Forget  the  tiresome  sub-plots  about  Indian  rights  and  economy  vs  ecology, all  you  need  to  know  is  that  here  are  amphibious  monsters  who  kill  the  men  and  rape  the  women.

Anne  was  a  Jewish  girl  from  New  York  who  studied  acting  and  dance  from  an  early  age. She  appeared  in  a  1968  film  as  a  teenager  but   at  6  foot  tall  was  much  more  successful  at  modellng. Her  next  film  role  in  Call  Harry  Clown  paired  her  up  with  Richard  Harris  and  they  were  soon  married. She  appeared  in  a  number  of  films  with  him despite  critical  snipes  about  her  acting  abilities. The  film  work  largely  dried  up  after  they  were  divorced  in  1982  but   she  continued  working  in  TV  to  the  end  of  the  nineties.

453 Terror On Tour ( 1980 )

 Thisa  low  budget  slasher  was made  in  just  seven  days  which  is  the  only  possible  mitigation  for  such  a   wretchedly  low  quality  product. The  acting  is   terrible  and  the  script  veers  between  aimless  and  embarrassing. A  rock group  combining  Kiss  make-up, Alice  Cooper  stunts  and  instantly  forgettable  music  have  a  few  hangers  on,  one  of  whom  dresses  up  as  one  of  the  band  and  starts  stabbing  the  groupies. That's  the  whole  plot:  the  rest  is  just  padding  and  it's  all  shot  in  semi-darkness  so  you  can't  tell  who's  who.

452 Beyond Evil ( 1980 )

 This  B-movie  is  diabolical  but  not  in  the way it's  supposed  to  be. When  it's  not  risible due  to  the  cheap  special  effects, it's  just  grindingly  boring. An  architect and  his  wife   Barbara   move  into  a  large  house  in  the  Philippines , a  move  facilitated  by  Barbara's  ex-boyfriend. The  house  used to  belong  to a  witch  that  all  the  locals still  fear. You can  guess  where  it  goes  from  there  but  the  execution  is  dire.

451 Death Ship (1980)

 The  Poseidon  Adventure  meets  Event Horizon  in  this  film  from  Canadian  director  Alvin  Rakoff. A  cruise  liner  captained  by  a  grumpy  George  Kennedy is  rammed  by  an  apparently  derelict  black  ship. It   waits  around  to  pick  up  and  then  pick  off  a  handful  of  survivors  despite  having  no  visible  crew. Despite a  sparing  use  of  gore, this  is  a  pretty  grim  film  with  the  expertise  of  casr  and  crew  conjuring  a  convincing  aura  of  dread . The  light  relief  provided  by  the  two  kids  somehow  makes  it  worse.

Victoria  is  an  English  actress  who  worked  mainly  in  TV. She  had  a  recurring  role  in  a  later  series  of  Howard's  Way. 450 Altered States ( 1980)

 This  is  more  of  a  science  fiction film  than  horror  given  the  zero  body  count  though  it's  close  enough  to  David  Cronenberg's  work  to  count. It  is  though  a  Ken  Russell  film.  William  Hurt in  his  first  film  role  plays  Eddie  Jessup, an   arrogant  academic  researching  schizophrenia  who  starts  experimenting  on  himself  with  the  aid  of  an Indian  brew  from  Mexico . He  experiences increasingly  intense  visions , brought  to  the  screen  with  Russell's  usual  flamboyance, until  they  start  to  become  more  than  just  visions. The  script  is  so  wordy  that  the  actors  have  to  deliver their  lines  at  a  frantic  pace  which  makes  it  quite  an  exhausting  watch  but  on  he  whole  worthwhile.

She  has  been  in  relationships  with  British  actor  Richard  Jordan  with  whom  she  has  a  son  and  playwright  David  Hare.

Blink  and  you'll  miss  her  but  this  was  Drew's  first  film. A  member  of  the  famous  acting  dynasty, Drew  had  appeared  in  a  dogfood  commercial  before  she'd  turned  one. Her  big  break  came  with  E.T. in  1982. She  was  the  textbook  troubled  teen  with  severe  addiction  problems  but  came  through  that  to  become  a  respected  actress  mainly  in  comic  roles. She  went  on  to  found  her  own  production  company  with  great  success  but  has  attracted  criticism  for  inserting  herself  into  films  in  which  she  would  otherwise  not  have  been  cast, most  notoriously  Charlie's  Angels.

449 The Boogeyman (1980 )

 The  title and  the  opening  sequence  suggest  a  virtual  re-tread  of  Halloween  but  it  then  goes  somewhere  quite  different  suggesting  a  deliberate  piece  of  misdirection. After  horrendous  abuse at  the hands  of  mother's  boyfriend, a  young  boy  named  Willy  kills  him  with  a  knife  supplied  by  sister  Lacey. Twenty  years  later  he  can't  talk  and  she's  having  nightmares. A   therapeutic visit to  the  place  where  it  happened   makes  things  worse  by  unleashing  a  malevolent supernatural  force. The  narrative then  goes  haywire  with  the  targeting  of  random bystanders, loose  ends  galore  and  nothing  really  explained. With  the  exception  of  horror  veteran  John  Carradine  as  a  psychiatrist, the  acting  is  pretty  ropey  too.

448 The Awakening (1980)

 This  was  a  big  budget ( particularly  for  a  British  film )  adaptation  Of  Bram  Stoker's  The  Jewel  Of  Seven  Stars  although  te  film  owes  at  least  as  much  to  The  Omen. Charlton  Heston  came  over  to  star  as  the  driven  Egyptologist  looking  for  the  body  of  a  notorious  quuen only  to  find  that  her  curse  starts  working  on  his  family  the  moment  he  finds  the  tomb. Despite  looking  fabulous  this  got  bucketed  on  release  and  it  hasn't  aged  well. The  main problem  is  the  pacing with  an  overlong  prologue, very  saggy  middle  section  then  a  frantic last  half  hour  requiring  multiple  leaps  of  logic. 

Stephanie  Zimbalist  ( as  Margaret )

23  year  old  Stephanie  was  born  in  Manhattan. This  was  only her  second  film  role  after  a  busy  few  years  on  TV  and  her  film  career  never  recovered from  the  mauling  her  performance  received. It  was  a  different  story  on  TV  enjoying  great  success  in  Remington  Steele  for  five  years   and  regular  work  thereafter. She  is  also  very  active  in  theatre   and  her  career  is  ongoing.

447 Schizoid ( 1980)

 Another  slasher  about  murders  taking  place  within  a  therapy  group,  this  is  marginally  better  than  Phobia  but  not  by  much.  Klaus  Kinski sleep  walks  his  way  through  his  role  as  Dr  Thale, a  psychiatrist  with  a  moody  daughter  and  scant  regard for  professional  ethics  where  sex  is  concerned. One  of  the  patients  he's  bonking is an  agony  aunt  who  starts  receiving  disturbing  notes.  It's  unexciting  and  barely  coherent -  many  of  the  scenes  could  be  re-ordered without  losing  continuity  and  the  climax  is  perfunctory.

Donna  Wilkes ( as  Alison Thale )

446 Terror Train (1980)

The  film's  producer  said  at  the  time  he  wanted  "Halloween On A Train "  and  that's  a  fair  summary of the  plot. A  group  of  medical  students, none  of  whom  you'd  want  to  operate on  you -ever, hire  a  steam  train  excursion for  a  fancy  dress New  Year's Eve  party. Some  of  them are carrying  a  guilty  secret and  of  course  it  starts  to  catch  up  with  them. The  cast includes magician  David  Copperfield as  the  onboard  entertainment  and  to  be  honest  his  stunts  are  more  engaging than  the  rest  of  the  film.

Dee  Dee  was  a  Canadian  model  of  mixed  parentage and  this  was  her  first  credited  film  role.  Two  years  later  she  re-launched  herself  as  a  singer  named  Vanity  under  the  tutelage  of  Prince  and  used  that  name  thereafter. Her  screen  career  continued  until  1997  when  she  decided  to  give  her  time  to  the  Church, She  died  in  2016  of  kidney  failure. 

 

445 Without Warning (1980)

 This  is  a  rather  humdrum  sci-fi  horror  film  that  fails  to  captivate  through  poor  acting, lack  of  suspense  and  a  comical-looking  alien. A  young  couple  find  themselves caught  between an  alien  visitor  who  flings  blood  sucking  organisms ( looking  a  lot  like  Alien's  face-huggers )  as  weapons  and  crazy  locals  headed  by  Jack  Palance  and  Martin  Landau  trying  to  out-ham  each  other.

Tarah Nutter  ( as  Sandy )

 This  cheap and nasty mash-up  of   The  Texas  Chainsaw  Massacre  and  I  Spit On Your Grave  is  badly  made  and  pretty  unpleasant  but  at  least  the  bad  guys  get  what's  coming to them. A  white  trash  family  living  out  in  the  sticks  prey  on  tourists  who  come  too  close  for  their  own  gratification.

Nancy  Hendrickson (  as  Abby )
