236 The Skull ( 1965 )

This  was  a  full  length  Amicus  movie,  again  starring  Cushing  and  Lee  although  the  latter's  only  in  a  supporting  role.  It's  no  classic  but  enjoyable  enough.

The  duo  are  rival  collectors  of  occult  artefacts. Christopher  Maitland  ( Peter  Cushing )  is  the  less  scrupulous , willing  to  deal  with the  seedy  Marco  ( Patrick  Wymark )  to  enhance  his  collection. He  offers  Maitland  the  skull  of  the  Marquis  de  Sade  despite  the  grim  fates  that  have  befallen  its  previous  possessors.

235 Repulsion ( 1965 )

Roman  Polanski's  first  excursion  into  horror  pictures  is  still  regarded  as  a  classic, breaking  new  ground  in  displaying  the  links  between  horror  and  sex.

Carol  Ledoux is  a  frigid  young  Belgian  woman  who  becomes  increasingly  agitated  by  the  sexual  noises  when  her  sister  Helen  entertains  her  boyfriend  Michael. When  Helen  and  Michael  go  away  however  her  mental  disintegration  accelerates  with  strange  visions  and  either  fantasies  or  memories  of  rape. When  gentlemen  come  calling  at  the  apartment  there  is  trouble  .

Thursday 27 July 2017

234 Fanatic ( 1965 )

This  was  Hammer's  first  stab  at  the  "hag  horror"  genre, a  spate  of  films  using  faded  greats  as  unhinged  maniacs  in  the  wake  of  Whatever  Happened  To  Baby  Jane ?  They  imported  Tallulah  Bankhead  for  this  purpose  and  certainly  got  their  money's  worth  with  a  scenery-chewing  performance.

Bankhead  plays  Mrs  Trefoyle, an  old  woman  grieving  for  her  dead  son  with  sinister  servants. His  American  fiance  Patricia  decides  to  pay  her  respects  on  a  trip  to  England  and  soon  comes  to  regret  the  decision.

Sex : No

Death : Survives

Yootha  was   still  primarily  a  straight  actress  at  this  point  , not  having  found  her  comedy  feet  yet. She  will  always  be  remembered  for  Mildred  Roper  in  Man  About  the  House  and  then  George  and  Mildred.  She  died  of  liver  failure  in  1980  aged  73.

Gwendolyn  Watts  ( as  Gloria )

233 Dr Terror's House of Horrors (1965 )

Cushing  and  Lee  were  not  contracted  exclusively  contracted  to  Hammer  and  so  both  appear  in  the  first  of  a  run  of  portmanteau  films  made  by  rivals  Amicus.

Cushing plays  Dr  Schreck , a  mysterious  scientist  who  appears  in  a  railway  carriage  amongst  five  other  men  ( a  very  eclectic  cast  including  Lee, a young  Donald  Sutherland, Roy  Castle  and  Alan "Not Arf " Freeman ). He  offers  to  tell  the  fortunes  of  each  one  using  the  cards, giving  rise  to  five  separate  stories. Jennifer  Jayne  ( as  Nicole  Carroll )

Sex : Appears  in  a  nightdress

Death : Staked  through  the  heart  as  a  vampire

In  a  film  not  over-blessed  with  good  female  roles, Jennifer  probably  has  the  best  one  as  a  vampire  bride.

Isla  Blair  ( as Gallery  assistant )

Sex : No

Death :  Survives

This  was  the  Indian  born  actress's  first  film  role  but  she  is  another  TV  stalwart  . She  is  married  to  Julian  Glover. She  caused  a  buzz  by  appearing  topless  aged  52  in  The  Final  Cut  in  1996. She  is  now  72.

232 Die, Monster, Die ! ( 1965 )

This   H P  Lovecraft  adaptation  is  not  quite  as  dramatic  as  its  title  suggests and the  exposition  is  somewhat  woolly  but  it's  atmospheric  and  looks  gorgeous. It  was  made  by  American  International  Pictures  but  filmed  in  the  UK.

Steve  Reinhart   ( Nick  Adams ) is  an  American  student  who  comes to  visit  his  girlfriend  Susan  at  her  family  mansion. Thursday 20 July 2017

231 Devils of Darkness ( 1965 )

This  is  a  non-Hammer  British  movie  about  a  French  vampire  leading  a Satanic  cult. It  starts  promisingly  then  sags  badly  in  the  middle with  a  dull  lead  performance  by  William  Sylvester. It  eventually  improves  but  isn't  really  worth  the  effort.

Count  Sinistre  ( Hubert  Paul )  is  a  vampire  ruling  the  roost  in  a small  town  in  Brittany. A photographer  holidaying  there  Paul  Baxter  ( Sylvester )  loses  three  friends  there  but  the  local  police  aren't  interested .Paul  decides  to  investigate  once  back  in  London  but  is  pursued  by  Sinistre  who  needs  the  talisman  he  has  unwittingly  picked  up.

Rona  Anderson  ( as  Anne  )

Sex : No

Death :  Burned  to  death  on  Sinistre's  orders

Rona  had  a  long  career  as  an  actress  going  back  to  the  late  forties  but  her  own  career was  overshadowed  by  that  of  her  husband  Gordon  Jackson  with  whom  she  starred  in  The  Prime  of  Miss  Jean  Brodie . She  retired  shortly  after  his  death  in  1990. She  died  in  2013  aged  87.

230 Curse of the Fly ( 1965 )

Although  supposedly  set  in  Montreal,  this  third  instalment  in  the  Fly  saga  was  farmed  out  to  Britain  and  features  an  almost  all  British  cast. It  has  continuity  breaks  with  the  previous films  but  features  the  same  family. It's  not  very  scary  but  has  its  moments.

Patricia  Stanley  a  pianist  escapes  from  a  mental  home  after  a  nervous  breakdown. She  is rescued  by  a  handsome  stranger  ( George  Baker )  and  marries  him. Monday 17 July 2017

229 Curse of Simba ( 1965 )

This  very  un-pc  film  was   director  Lindsay  Shonteff's  follow-up  to  Devil  Doll  and  had  the  same  lead  in  Bryant  Haliday. It's  not  very  good . The  wafer -thin  plot  takes  a  long  while   to  get  going  and  the  film   lacks  any  character  you  could  give  a  stuff  about.

Haliday  plays   white  game  hunter  Mike  Stacey  in  Africa  who  crosses  into  the  territory  of  the  Simbasa  tribe  to  kill  a  wounded  lion, thus  invoking  a  lethal  curse. When  he  returns  to  London  he  is  plagued  by  nightmares  and  strange  visions  of  vengeful  negroes.

228 Nightmare ( 1964 )

This  is  a  run  of  the  mill  black  and  white  suspense  thriller  from  Hammer,  always  watchable  but  lacking  any  real  surprises.

Janet  is  a  rather  old-looking  schoolgirl  sent  home  because  her  nightmares  about  her  insane mother  are  disturbing  other  pupils. When  she  arrives  she  finds  her  guardian  Henry  Baxter  has  employed  a  nurse  Grace  to  keep  her  company. However  she  also   finds  the  house  has  another  guest, a  strange  dark-haired  woman  who  hastens  on  her  mental  disintegration.

Jennie  Linden  ( as  Janet )

Sex :  Janet's  scene  with  Baxter  hints  at  a  sexual  relationship  but  that  thread  isn't  really  picked  up

Death :  Survives

Jennie  was  25  when  she  made  the  film. The  Sussex-born  actress  is  best  known  as  Glenda  Jackson's  co-star  in  Women  in  Love   but  she  had  a  35  year  acting  career  in  film  and  TV. She  retired  in  the  mid-nineties  and  is  now  77.

Moira  Redmond  ( as  Grace  Maddox )

Sex : Grace  is  Baxter's  mistress

Death : Survives  but  may  face  capital  punishment

Moira   was   more  of  a  film  and  TV  actress  who  specialised  in  aristocratic  ladies  in  period  dramas. She  too  was  working  until  the  mid-nineties. She  died  in  2006   aged  77.

Clytie  Jaessop  ( as  Mrs Baxter )

Sex : No

Death : Knifed   by  Janet , an  incident  engineered  by  Baxter  and  Grace

Clytie  was  from  Australia. She  had  some  experience  in  musical  theatre  but  in  the  sixties  was  running  a  trendy  art  gallery  in  London  and  owed  her  brief  film  career  to  her  friendship  with  Freddie  Francis. In  the  eighties  she  directed  the  film  Emma's  War.  She  died  six  weeks  ago  aged  87.

Julie  Samuel  ( as  Anne )

Sex : No

227 The Tomb of Ligeia ( 1964 )

The  last  of  Roger  Corman's  Poe  adaptations  was  filmed  in  England  around  Castle Grace  Priory. The  film  is  stunningly  beautiful  to  look  at  but  the  story  is  ludicrous. That  a  bright  young  girl  would  throw  herself  at  a  morbid , black-clad  man  she  met  lurking  around  his  first  wife's  grave  is  incredible  enough  but  when  he's  played  by  53-year  old  Vincent  Price   ( a  studio  stipulation )  it  becomes  absurd. The  film  isn't  in  the  least  bit  scary, it's  just  overblown  hysterical  nonsense.

Elisabeth  Shepherd  ( as  Rowena  / Ligeia )

Sex :  Nice  cleavage

Death : Rowena  survives, Ligeia  has  been  dead  all  the  time

Elisabeth  was  born  in  England  and  this  film  was  near  the  beginning  of  a  long  career  that  is  still  ongoing. In  2005  she  was  the  victim  of  identity  fraud  when  she  sub-let  her  home. She  is  now  80.

Penelope  Lee  ( as  Maid )

Sex : No

Death : Presumably  survives

Penelope  started  out  in  bit  parts  like  this  but  went  on  to  be  a  top  radio  actress  with  a  steady  string  of  TV  roles  to  boot. She  is  also  noted  for  running  the  Upottery  arts  festival. She  is  now  79.

226 The Masque of the Red Death (1964)

This  was  the  most  ambitious  of  Roger  Corman's  Poe  adaptations, a  beautiful-looking film  with  an  unsparingly  bleak  vision. The  film  doesn't  have  a  strong  central  narrative,  proceeding  largely  by  vignettes,  usually  featuring  acts  of  pitiless  cruelty. Vincent  Price  holds  it  all  together with  a  peerless  portrayal  of  bored  evil.

He  plays  Prince  Prospero, a  medieval  tyrant  who  believes  his, and  wife  Juliana's, commitment  to  Satan  make  his  castle  a  safe  refuge  for  his  friends  while  a  terrifying  plague  ravages  the  village  below.  He  abducts  a  devout  peasant  girl, Francesca  for  his  own  amusement and  she  becomes  a  horrified  witness  to  his  cruelty.

Jane  Asher  ( as  Francesca )

Sex : Francesca  is  forced  to  bathe  but covers  her  vital  bits

Death : Survives

Jane  was  only  18  when  she  made  the  film  and  looks  fabulous  in  a  series  of  tight  outfits  even  if  her  acting  isn't  all  that  great.

Hazel  Court  ( as  Juliana )

Sex : Juliana  brands  herself  with  a  Satanic  mark  on  her right  breast

Death : Clawed  to  death  by a  falcon

Apart  from  a  brief  uncredited  appearance  in  The Omen III,  this  was  Hazel's  last  horror  role.

Verina  Greenlaw ( as  Esmeralda )

Sex : n/a

Death : Survives

Verina  plays  a  dwarf  dancer  but  she  was  actually  a  child  and  an  adult  voice  was  dubbed  for  her  lines. In  the  same  year  she  appeared  in  Father  Goose  but  those  were  her  last  film  roles.  She  did  not  pursue  an  acting  career  in  adulthood  and  is  now  61.

Thursday 13 July 2017

225 The Gorgon ( 1964 )

Hammer  turned  to  Greek  mythology  for  this  one  with  the  horror  coming  from  Megaera , a  snake  headed  woman  who  literally  petrifies  anyone  who  looks  at  her  face. Despite  a  promising  beginning  and  excellent  cast,  this  is  an  unsatisfactory  picture  because  it's  so  obvious  who  the  monster's  alter  ego  is   and  the  special  effects  inevitably  fail  to make  her  sufficiently  horrific.

Dr  Namaroff  ( Peter  Cushing )  is  the  resident  doctor  at  an  asylum  in  the  German  town  of Vandorf  where  he  connives  with  the  local  police  inspector  Kanof  ( Patrick  Troughton )  to  conceal  the  real  truth  behind  a  regular  series  of  murders. When  a  young  girl  Sascha  is  killed  and  her  boyfriend  commits  suicide  the latter's  father  and  then  brother  Paul  ( Richard  Pasco )  seek  to  uncover  the  truth . Paul's  friend  Prof  Meister  ( Christopher  Lee )  thinks  he  knows  the answer.

Barbara  Shelley ( as  Carla  Hoffman )

Sex : A  relationship  with  Namaroff  is  suggested.

Death :  Beheaded  by  Meister

Barbara  is  very  buttoned-up  in  this  one.

Toni  Gilpin  (  as  Sascha  Cass )

Sex :  Sascha  poses  topless  for  her  boyfriend  ( back  view  only )  and  then  reveals  she  is  pregnant

Death : Turned  to  stone  after  running  into  the  Gorgon

Toni  was  originally  Antonia  McGettigan  from  Glasgow. She  was  active  in  film  and  TV  in  the sixties  but  retired  at  the  end  of  the  decade. She  died  in  October  last  year  aged  81.

Sally  Nesbitt  ( as  Sister )

Sex : No

Death : Survives

Sally's  role  here  is  uncredited  but  she  went  on  to  be  a  successful  TV  and  occasionally  film  actress  into  the  mid-nineties. She  was  born  Sally  Hunt in  India, her  father  being  Sir  John  Hunt , leader  of  the  1953  Everest  expedition. She  is  now  78.

Wednesday 12 July 2017

224 Devil Doll ( 1964 )

This  is  a  low-budget  British  horror  film  but  it's  genuinely  creepy  with  a  splendid  villain.  It  also  pushes  the  envelope  a  bit  as  far  as  sex  is  concerned.

The  Great  Vorelli  ( Bryant  Haliday )  is  a  stage  hypnotist  and  ventriloquist  whose  doll  Hugo  apparently  moves  and  speaks  for  itself. An  intrigued  reporter  Mark  English  ( William  Sylvester )  investigates  him  and  asks  his  socialite  girlfriend  Marianne  to  volunteer  at  a  performance. Vorelli  recognises  her  and  uses  his  powers  to  move  in  on  her.

Yvonne  Romain  ( as  Marianne  Horn )

Sex : Marianne  has  sex  in  a  car  with  Mark  then  is  raped  under  hypnosis  by  Vorelli. In  both  cases  the main  action  is  offscreen  but  the  lead  up  goes  further  than  before.

Death : Survives

Yvonne  gets  to  show  off  her  dancing  skills  in  a  good  role  although  it's  a  pity  she's  not  in  the  second  half  of  the  film  that  much.

Sandra  Dorne   ( as  Magda )

Sex : Magda  reveals  most  of  her  enormous  boobs  whilst  asleep. She  is  Vorelli's  mistress.

Death : Hugo  is  manipulated  into  stabbing  her  by  Vorelli,  shortly  after a  final  shag .

Sandra  was  originally  Joan  Smith  from   Keighley. A  popular  pin-up  she  had  some  good  roles  in  fifties  crime  pictures  but  was  slipping  into  supporting  roles  and  work  became  scarcer  after  the  early  seventies. Unfortunately  her  last  picture  was  the  execrable  Eat  the  Rich  in 1987. She  died  in  1992  aged  68.

Trixie  Dallas  (  as  Miss  Penton )

Sex : No

Death : Survives

This  was  Trixie's  only  screen  role. She  has  quite  a  few  lines  as English's  secretary.

Heidi  Erich  ( as  Grace )

Sex : Grace  is  Magda's  successor  as  Vorelli's  stage  partner  and  mistress

Death : Survives

Heidi  was  a  bit  part  actress  who  spoke  fluent  German. She  disappeared  from  view  in  the  late  sixties.

223 Curse of the Mummy's Tomb ( 1964 )

Hammer  came  out  with  a  second   murderous  mummy  film  although  this  one  has  no  connection  with  The  Mummy  apart  from  the  re-use  of  Michael  Ripper  and  George  Pastell  in  different  parts. It's  a  very  dull  movie  which  has  little  new  to  offer  and  badly  misses  the  star  presence  of  a  Lee  or  Cushing.

A  group  of  Egyptologists  including  a female  Annette  Dubois  excavate  a  mummy's  tomb  amid  the  usual  dire  warnings  of  a  curse  from  the  locals. Their  backer  Alexander  King ( Fred  Clark ) wants  to   exhibit  him  a  la  King  Kong.  The  mummy  is  one  of  two  feuding  brothers  and  there's  a  flashback  to  his  death. In  the  meantime, Annette  is  wooed  by  Adam  Beauhamp  ( Terence  Morgan ) , a  mysterious  playboy   who  seems  to  know  rather  too  much  for  an  amateur.

Jeanne  Roland ( as  Annette  Dubois )

Sex : Great  cleavage

Death : Survives

Jeanne  was   really  Myrna  Rollins,  an  Anglo-Burmese  actress  born  in   Rangoon  and  her  lines  had  to  be  over-dubbed  to  maintain  the  fiction  she  was  French. She  had  a  small  part  in  You  Only  Live  Twice  in  1967  but  disappeared  from  view  not  long  afterwards. She  is  now  80.

222 The Curse of the Living Corpse ( 1964 )

This  is  an  independent  low-budget  film and  it  often  shows.  The  script  barely  makes  sense    but  it  is  worth  watching  for  the  young  Roy  Scheider  in  the  leading  role.

Rufus  Sinclair  is  a domestic  tyrant  subject  to  cataleptic  trances  and  hence  has  a  fear  of  being  buried  alive. He  apparently  dies  and  the  family  hasten  to bury  him  only  to  discover  that  his  will makes  their  inheritance  dependent  on  precautions  which  they  neglected  and  prophesies  a  horrible  death  for  each  one  of  them. Soon  a  masked  figure  begins  fulfilling  those  predictions.

Margot  Hartman  ( as  Vivian  Sinclair )

Sex :  Vivian  strips  for  a  bath  and  there  are  glimpses  of  her  breasts  and  later  her  buttocks

Death : Drowned  in  the  bath  by  her  husband

Margot   made  a  handful  of  film  appearances  before  retiring  in  the  late  sixties. She  made  an  unexpected  comeback  after  thirty  years  and  her  last  appearance  in  2003  was  in  the  film  Descendant  for  which  she  actually  wrote  the  script.

Candace  Hilligoss  (  as  Deborah  Benson )

Sex : No

Death : Survives

This  is  a  rather  disappointing  appearance  from  the  star  of  Carnival of  Souls.  Candace  plays  an  uninteresting  innocent  who  has  little  to  do  except  scream  and  get  rescued.

Linda  Donovan  ( as  Letty  Crews )

Sex : Letty  is  screwing  the  elder  son  ( offscreen )

Death :  Stabbed  and  then  decapitated  by  the  killer

This  was  Linda's  only  film  role.

221 The Damned ( 1963 )

This  little-known  Hammer film,   guest  directed  by  the  blacklisted  Hollywood  director  Joseph  Losey  is  more  science  fiction  than  horror  and  the  title  is  more  of  an  attempt  to  capitalise  on  the  success  of  the  superficially  similar  Children  of  the  Damned  than  an  accurate  indication  of  its  content. It's  a  bit  over ambitious  trying  to  present  two  unconvincing  romances  as  well  as  its  science  fiction  storyline  and  to  give  Oliver  Reed's  character  more  psychological  depth  than  he  needs.  It  also  features  possibly  the  worst  song  in  cinematic  history.

Alexander  Knox  plays  Bernard  ( no  surname; I  guess  Nigel  Kneale  wouldn't  play  ball )  a  government  scientist  running  a  top  secret  project  near  Weymouth  though  that  doesn't  stop  him  encouraging  his  sculpting  mistress  Freya  ( Viveca  Lindfors ) to  vacation  next  door. Meanwhile  an  American  tourist  Simon  Welles  ( Mcdonald  Carey )  is  lured  by  an  attractive girl,  Joan,  into  an  ambush  by  her  brother  King  ( Oliver  Reed )  and  his  gang  of  bikers. She  then  looks  him  up  against  King's  wishes  and  his  pursuit  drives  them  into  discovering  the  shocking  secret.

Shirley  Anne  Field  ( as  Joan )

Sex :  Offscreen  with  Welles

Death : Predicted  to die  from  radiation  sickness

Shirley  Anne's  entirely  bra-less  performance  would  make  the  film worth  catching  on  its  own.

Rachel  Clay  ( as  Victoria  )

Sex : n/a

Death : Survives

Rachel  has  half  a  dozen  other  acting  credits  in  the  early  sixties  but  she  didn't  progress  to adult  roles. She  is  now  67.

Caroline  Sheldon  ( as  Elisabeth )

Sex : n/a

Death : Survives

This  is  Caroline's  only  film  role. She  is  now  67.

Rebecca  Dignam  (  as  Anne  )

Sex : n/a

Death :  Survives

This  was  the  last  of  a  handful  of  film  roles  from Rebecca  who is  completely  obscure.

Siobahn  Taylor  (  as  Mary )

Sex : n/a

Death : Survives

Siobahn  went  on  from this  to  play  Susan  in  the  TV  series  of  Swallows  and  Amazons.  She  did  go  on to make  sporadic  film appearances  as  an  adult  but  the  last  to  date  was  in  1989.She  is  now  67.
