497 Amityville 3-D ( 1983 )

 This  is  a  franchise  that  ran  out  of  ideas  pretty quickly on  this  evidence. This  looks  like  the  result  of  a  meeting  where  random  elements, mostly  borrowed  from  better  films  were  tossed  in  and  then  a  script  of  sorts  linking  them to  the  haunted  house was  cobbled  together. The  resulting  film  is  flat , illogical  and  deadly  dull.

Tess  Harper  ( as  Nancy )

Tess  was  already  in  her  thirties  and  working  in  theatre  and  local  TV when  a  casting  director  for  the  film   Tender  Mercies  spotted  her  and  she  won  the  lead  role.  This  was  her  second  film. In 1987 she  was  Oscar-nominated for  Crimes Of  The  Heart. She  has  worked  steadily ever  since  in  film  and  TV  winning  some  new  recognition  in  Breaking  Bad  between  2008 and  2010.

Candy  Clark ( as Melanie )

Maybe  it  was a  lack  of  respect  for  the  material  ( understandable ) but  Candy's  performance  in  this is  awful.

Lori  Loughlin ( as  Susan)

Death : Drowns  after  falling  out  of  a  motorboat offscreen  ( so  that  the  film  doesn't  have  to  explain  why  her  three  friends  don't  simply  pull  her  back  on  to  the  boat.

Lori began  her  working  life  as  a  model  and  began  acting  on   daytime TV  with  a  three year  run  in  The  Edge  of  Night  from 1980. This  was  her  first  film role. Her  film  career  has  been  unspectacular  but  she  has  achieved  great  success  on  TV  in  Full  House, 90210  and  When  Calls  The  Heart. She  co-created  and  starred  in  the  series  Summerland.  In  2018, she  was  arrested  for  involvement  with  her  husband  in  a  college  admissions scandal  and  served  two  months  in  prison  in  2020. Most  of  her  contracts  were  cancelled  but  she  has  done  a  bit  of  TV work  since  her  release.

Meg  Ryan ( as  Lisa )

This  was  Meg's  second  film  and  she  does  inject   some  spark in  her  limited screen  time. She was  botn  in  Connecticut. Success  on  TV  in  As  The  World  Turns   and  supporting  roles  in  films  such  as  Top  Gun  led  to  her  breakthrough  role  in  When  Harry  Met  Sally  in  1989. She  was  an  A-list  star  throughout  the  nineties  but her  major  successes were  all  romantic  comedies. Her  attempts  to  break  out  of  the  mould  in  the  noughties  were  less  successful  and  her  star  waned  particularly  after  the  dismal  erotic  thriller In  The  Cut in  2003. Her  appearances  since  then have  been  sporadic. She  has  directed  a  couple  of  films  since  2015  to  general  indifference. She has  also  had  a  high profile  love  life  with  marriage  to  Dennis  Quaid  and  hook-ups  with  Russell  CRowe  and  singer  John Mellencamp.

496 The Dead Zone ( 1983 )

 The pairing  of  David  Cronenberg  and  Stephen  King  always looked  a  winner  and  so  it  proved.  Christopher Walken plays a  badly  injured  man  who  comes  out  of  a  coma  with  an  ability  to  see  into  and  change,  the  future. This  soon  presents  a  moral  dilemma. Tight  direction, a  compelling  story  and  a  great  cast  make  this  possibly  the  best  Stephen  King  adaptation.

Brooke  Adams ( as  Sarah )

495 Pieces (1983)

 The  Georges  pop  up  again in  tis  one  which  was  made  before but  released  after Mortuary. It's  a  Spanish-American  production with  a  mainly Spanish  cast  ( some  of  whom  are  uncredited even  on  imdb). Christopher  plays  a  detective  and  Lynda  an  undercover cop posing as a  tennis  instructor. They're  on  the  hunt  for  a  chainsaw -wielding  maniac  who  kills his  victims  in  broad  daylight  on  a  university  campus yet  somehow  manages  to  elude  them. The  kills  are  pretty  graphic  but  otherwise  it's  impossible  to  take  too  seriously.

494 Mortuary (1983)

 This  rather  dismal  effort  which  cobbles  together family  secrets,  occult  practices  and  a  psycho  who  changes  his  modus  operandi  for  no  apparent  reason  would  be  completely  forgotten  were  it  not  for  its  casting. Firstly it  was  the final  film  for  B-movie  stalwart  Christopher  George. Secondly it  was  the  first  film  for  Mary  Elisabeth Mcdonough  straight  from  The  Waltons 

Mary Elisabeth McDonough  ( as  Christie )

It's  laughably  obvious that  Mary  had  a  body  double  for  the nude  scenes  particularly  when  she's  on  the  slab. It's  also  pretty  clear  she's  using  tape  to  keep  her  breasts  in  the  nightdress  she  wears  for  most  of  her  scenes 

Mary  is  from  California . She  made  an  appearance  in General Hospital  as  a  two  year  old  but  her  acting  career  really  began at  10  when she  took  the  career -defining  role  of  Erin Walton. She  stuck  with  it  till  the  series  ended  in  1981  and  appeared in  all  the  subsequent TV movies. Her  career  as  an  adult  has  been  low-key  and  hampered  by  suffering  from  lupus  which  she  has  blamed  on  having breast  implants  but  it's  still  going. In  2018  her  novel  Christmas On Honeysuckle Lane was  made  into  a  TV  movie

493 Cujo ( 1983)

 One  of  Stephen  King's  less well-regarded  novels, it  nevertheless lent  itself to  film  adaptation   and  this  is  a  pretty  decent  film even  if  it  jettisoned the bleak  ending. The  premise  is  simple. A  woman  and  her  asthmatic  son are  trapped  in  their  car  because  there's  a  rabid  St  Bernard 's dog  outside. It's  a  claustrophobic  siege  movie  which  maintains  the  tension  well.

492 Jaws 3-D

 This  entry  in  the  franchise  used  3-D  to  make  up  for  the  loss of  Roy  Scheider  and  anyone  else  from the  first  two  films though  Broady's  sons  return  albeit  recast  (one  of  them Dennis  Quaid )  and  relocated  to  Florida  where  a  major  sea  park  is  opening.Though  the  characters  are initially  attractive  they're  not  really  given  a  channce  to  develop as  the  action  jumps  from  one  crisis  to  the  next  and  the  3-D  only  highlights the  naff  effects. Watchable  but  not  very  good.

Bess Arnmstrong ( as Kate )

Bess came  from  Baltimore  and  her  career  was  on  the  up  after  starring  in  High  Road  To  China. However  her  next  film  The  House  Of  God never  made  it  to  cinemas  and  momentum  was  lost. In  the nineties  she  became  a TV  movie  queen. She  hasn't  done a  film  since  2088  but  still  regularly  appears  on  TV.

Lea  Thompson ( as  Kelly)

This  was  Lea's  first film  and  she  told  a  few  fibs  to  get the  part. She  obtained  her  carerr  making  role  as  Lorraine McFly  in  the Back  To  The  Future  franchise   and  has never  been  out of  work  since. Although  her  film  career  is  ongoing, since  2004  she  has  been balancing  it  with  working  as  a  TV  director.

491 Psycho II

 This  long-delayed sequel to  Hitchcock's masterpiece  saw  Anthony  Perkins  returning  as  Norman  Bates  looking  to  pick  up  the pieces  of  a  normal  life  22  years  later. Perkins'  sympathetic performance  compensates  for  an  over-complex  plot  and  makes  the  ending  that  much  more  shocking.

Meg  Tilly ( as Mary Loomis )

Death : Shot  by  the  police

Meg  was  born  in  the  US  but  brought  up  in  Canada. She  joined  a ballet  company  and  made  her  film  debut  in  Fame  as  a  dancer  but  by  the  time the  film  came  out  she'd had  to  retire  through  injury. This  was  a  starmaking  role  for  her  and  she  had  a successful  eighties  with  an  Oscar  nomination  for Agnes of God in  1985. In 1994,  she  quit  acting  and  began  a  new  career  as  a  successful novelist.  She  returned  to  acting  in  2012  winning  a  number  of  Canadian  awards  for  her  role  in  the  series Bomb Girls  and  has  appeared  in  a  couple  of  films.

490 The Final Terror (1983)

 Friday the 13th  meets  Deliverance  in  this  forest- set  slasher  where a  group  of  young campers  are menaced  by  an  unseen  killer. The  premise  is  fine , the  cast  includes  a  couple  of  famous  names  but  it  falls  a  bit  flat  due  to a  low  kill  count , paper-thin  characters  and  poor  acting.

She  achieved greatest  recognition  for  her  role  in  The  Colour  Purple  but  failed  to  build  on  that  and  gradually  diversified into  writing including a novel, screenplay  and  song  with  Stevie  Wonder . She  retired  from  acting  in  2007 to  raise  a  family  but  returned  to  the  stage in 2016.

489 The Hunger ( 1983)

 The  Hunger  was  Tony  -less talented brother of  Ridley- Scott's  directorial debut  and  is  an  arty  vampire film  in  which  an  ageless bisexual  female  Miriam  preys  on  humans , selecting  a  chosen  few to  be  her  consorts  though  they  suffer rapid  ageing  then  eternal  decrepitude  when  their  time  is  done. David  Bowie  plays her  latest  victim John  and  she  plans  to  replace  him  with  a  female  companion. It  does  have  its  moments but  otherwise  it's  too  slow  and  pretentious.

Catherine  Denueve ( as  Miriam )

Death : Doomed  to  eternal  decrepitude

Catherine  is  one  of  France's  most  celebrated  actresses. She  started  acting  as  a  child, making  her  film  debut in  1957. She  made  her  Hollywood  debut  in  Roman  Polanski's Repulsion   but  has  rarely ventured  into  English  language  films. She  was  Oscar-nominated  for  her  performance  in  1992's  Indochine. Her  careeer is  ongoing.

One  of  America's  most  celoebrated  actresses ,Susan  made  an  early  mark  in  Joe  in  1970, then worked  steadily  up  the  ladder  to  an  Oscar  nomination for  Atlantic City in  1980. Her  career  really  blossomed  in  the  late  eighties  with  three  more  nominations  before  a  final  win  for  Dead  Man  Walking  in  1995. That  marked  the  end  of  her  imperial  phase  though  she  has  kept  herself  very  busy  with  character  parts, voice  roles, TV  work  and  political  activism  and  shows  no  signs  of  slowing  down.

Beth Ehlers ( as Abby)

At  14  this  was  Beth's  first  film  role. She  has  only  made  one  other  due  toher  success  in  daytime soaps. She  first  joined  the  cast of  The  Guiding Light  in  1987 then  left  in  1993  to  relocate  to  California  with  her  boyfriend. She  worked  as  a  production  assistnt  on  commercials  and  videos  before  rejoining  the  show  for  another  eleven  years. She  switched  to  All  My  Children  for  a  couple  of  years  in  2008. She  currently  works  on  podcast  soap  Forever  And  A  Day.

488 Curtains (1983)

 This  Canadian  film  wastes  a  notable  cast  on  a  slasher  with  pretensions. John Vernon plays  an  egotistical  film  director who  arranges  for  his  actress friend  Samantha  ( Samantha  Eggar ) to  enter a mental asylum  to  prepare for  the  film  role  of  a  madwoman. From  that  point,  it  seems  like  one  of  the  patients  might  have  written  the  rest  of  the  script. Stryker  invites  six  other women  to  his  snowbound  mansion  to  audition for  the  part, most  of  them  glaringly  unsuitable. Samantha  escapes  and  the women  start  dying. The  film  manages  a  couple  of  impressive  set  pieces but  the  script is  all  over  the  place  with  too  many  plotholes to  count.

487 The House On Sorority Row (1983)

 This  is  a   fairly  entertaining entry in  the  slasher  genre. Seven  female college friends  are  holding  a  party to  celebrate  their  graduation  although  the  plot  does  rely  on  them  having  scarcely  a  brain  cell  between  them, They  accidentally  kill  their  housemistress  then  find  themselves  being  picked  off  as  they try  to  dispose  of  her  body during  the  party.  It's  completely  absurd but  good  fun  nonetheless.

Kate McNeil ( as Katie )

Kate  was  from  a  wealthy  Philadelphia  family  and  this  was  her  second  film. From  the  nineties  onwards  she  has  worked  mainly  in  TV  with  regular  roles in  WIOU  and  Bodies  Of  Evidence  and  a  long  string  of  guest  appearances. She is  still  active.

Eileen  Davidson ( as Nicki )

486 Xtro (1983 )

 This  british  sci-fi  horror  film  mixes  up  elements of  Close  Encounters, Alien  and  any  number  of  David  Cronenberg  movies  and  ends  up  a  pretty  confused  picture.  Phil  Sayer  stars  as  an alien  abductee  who  returns  as  a  changed  being  with  alien  designs  on  his  son It  is  effective  in  parts  but  let  down  by  an  incoherent  narrative  and  pretty  ropey  special  effects.

Bernice Stegers ( as Rachel )

Bernice  was  born  in  Liverpool and  began  acting in  the  early  seventies   with  bit  parts  in  film  and  TV. A  starring  role  in the  Italian  horror  film Macabro in  1980  led  to  a  brief  spell  of  leading  roles  in  the  first  half  of  the  eighties.After  that  she  largely  returned  to  TV ,  notably playing  the  Fergie  substitute  in  To  Play  The  King. She  had  a  minor  role  in  Four  Weddings  And  A  Funeral  due  to  her  marriage  to  producer  Mike  Newell. She  is  still  active.   

Maryam D'Abo ( as Annalise )

Death : Uncertain - she is  immobilised  and  used as  a  living womb  but  it's  not clear  what  her  eventual  fate  is

Maryam  was  making her  screen  debut  in  this .film. Though  often  playing European  characters ( she's  French here )  Maryam  is  actually  English  and  the  cousin  of  former  Manfred  Mann  singer  Mike D'Abo. The  highlight of  her  film  career was  the  lead  Bond  girl  in  1987's  The  Living Daylights  though she  simultaneously tarnished  her  reputation  by  appearing  in  Playboy. In  the  nineties, her  career  slumped and  she  was  mainly found  in  straight-to-video action  thrillers. In 2003 she married  film  director  Hugh Hudson  and  her  career  imptroved  with  good  roles  in  TV  mini-series. In  2007 she suffered  a  brain  haemorrage  but  recovered well. She  is  still active.

485 The Slumber Party Massacre ( 1982)

 Writer  Rita  Mae  Brown  intended  this  one to  be  a  parody  of  slasher  films  with  a  feminist  tinge  and  some  of  that  visions- the  teen  sisters flicking  through  Playgirl for  instance  but  the  studio  straightened  it  out  into  one  of  the  better  Halloween  clones.  Mature-looking  teen Trish  invites  similarly aged "schoolfriends"  to  a  slumber  party  at  her  house where  they  are  menaced  by  an  escaped  psycho  with  a  hand  drill. The  girls  are  pretty, the  body  count  is  high   but  the  kills  could  be  a  bit  more  inventive.

Michelle Michaels ( as Trish )

Apart  from  a  tiny  role  in  1980's  New  Year's  Evil, this  was  Michelle's  first  film. Thereafter  her  appearances  were  sporadic  and  usually in  bit  parts. She  disappears  after  1997.

Robin Stille ( as Nancy )

Robin  had  a  very  similar  career  but  it  was  curtailed  by  a  serious  drinking  problem  after  1990. She  committed  suicide  in  1996.

Although it  was  effectively  her  first  film, Debra  was  25  at  the  time  of  filming. She  started  out  as  a  dancer  but  extended  her  range  to  acting. Though  active  for  over  40  years, Debra's  filmography  is  a  bit  slim  due  to  her  extensive  theatrical  commitments. She  is  a  teacher  of  drama  and  dance  at  California  State  Uuniversity.

Gina,   who  used  three  different  surnames  during  her  short  career,  was  a  child  actress  best  known  for  her  role  as  Rachel  in  The  Oregon  Trail. This  was  her  only  significant  film  role  and  she refused  to  go  topless; the  breast  in  her  sex  scene  actually  belonged  to  Michelle  Michaels. She  dropped  out  of  acting  after  1985.

Jennifer is  something  of  a  mystery  as  this  was  her  only  film  role. Her  character  reppears  in  the  sequel  played  by  a  different  actress. She  came  from  New  York

Pamela  Roylance ( as  Coach  Rachel )

Despite  being  nearly 30, this  was  Pamela's  first  film. She  then  went  into  Little House On The Prairie  and  appeared  in  three subsequent TV  movies.  Her  subsequent  acting  career was  mainly  on  TV  but  she is  still  working.

Brinke Stevens ( as Linda )

This  was  the  first  speaking  role  for  the  27  year  old  glamour  model  from  San  Diego  who   went  on  to  become one of  the  hardest-working  scream  queens in  the  business  with  a  loarge devoted  fanbase. She  is  still  working  in  the  horror  genre  to  this  day.
