476 Next Of Kin ( 1982 )

 This  old  dark   house chiller  from  Australia  is atmospheric  and  has  its  moments but ultimately  it's  unsatisfying, moving  at  a  very  leisurely  pace  for  the  first  hour  then speeding  up  for  a  frenzied  finish  that  leaves  too  many  plotholes unexplained. Linda  inherits  a  large  house  from  her  mother which  is  being  run  as  an  old  people's  home. Linda  reluctantly  starts  managing  it  but  disturbing  events  start  happening  immediately

She  has  appeared  in  a  number  of  Australian  films  most  notably  A Cry  In  The  Dark. Her career  is  ongoing.

475 Basket Case ( 1982 )

 This  low-budget  horror  is  in  terrible  taste  and  the  acting  is  uniformly  awful  but  there's  a  certain  amount  of  black  humour  there and  an  impulse  to keep  watching  to  see  how  low  it  can  go. Duane  Bradley  and  his  severed Siamese  twin  Belial, not  much  more  than  a  grotesque  head  and  pair  of  arms, come  to  New  Yok to  take  bloody revenge  on  the  doctors  who  separated  them. The  twins have  a  telepathic link  and  when  Duane's  libido  is  aroused, Belial wants  in  on the  action too.

474 Cat People (1982)

 This  was  director  Paul  Schrader's  first  dip into  horror  and  it's  probably  the  first  definitively  eighties   horror  film  in  its  visual  aesthetic  and  soundtrack. It's  a  remake  of  the  1942  classic  but    of  course  much  more  graphic  and  erotic. A  young  woman Irena  joins  her  brother Paul  in  New  Orleans  after they  were  separated as  children but  he  soon  vanishes..His  disappearance  coincides with  the  capture of  a  large  black  panther. The  young zookeeper  Oliver begins  a  relationship with   Irena  when  he  sees  her  fascination  with  the  cat  but  comes  to  realise  their  connection is  way  outside  his  experience.  The  film  is  a  bit  too  long  and  the  leading  man  lacks  charisma  but  otherwise  it's  on  the  money.

Natassja  is  the  daughter  of  temperamental  German  actor  Klaus Kinski. She  started  acting  in  her  early  teens  and  attracted  controversy by  appearing nude  in  her  first  two  films, In  1976 she met  Roman  Polanski  and  given  subsequent  events  it  was  assumed  they  were  lovers  but  Kinski  has  denied  this. She  rose  to  stardom in  his  Tess in 1979. She  divided  her  time  between European  and  Hollywood  pictures  although  Revolution   in  1985  damaged  her  standing  in  the  latter. She  is  still  a  working  actress.

Despite  her  Irish  name  and  colouring,  Annette  was  born  in  Houston  but  moved  to  L.A. at 13  and  soon  made  her  TV  debut  in  1967. Her  most  prominent film  role  was  as  Superman's  love interest  in  Superman III.  She  returned  to  horror  in  the  TV  adaptation  of  Stephen  King's  It. After  that , she  was  mainly  to  be  found  in  TV  movies  until  landig  the  role  of  Martha  Kent  in  Smallville in  2001. She is still  a  working  actress.

Lynn Lowry ( as  Ruthie )

Berry  was  a  noted  fashion  photographer  from  New  York  who  got  into  acting through  her  marriage  to  Anthony  Perkins though  she  only  appeared  in  three  films  and  one  TV  series. After  Perkins' death  in  1992, she  ran  a  bar  in  Jamaica  with  her  new  boyfriend. She  died  on  9/11  when  she  was  a  passenger  on  the  plane that  crashed  into  the  North Tower.

  

473 Parasite (1982)

 This  sci-fi/body  horror   shocker  owes  a  lot  to  David  Cronenberg  but  would  be  completely  forgotten  without  the  star  name  in  the  cast.  In  1992  the  US  government  is  corrupt and  largely  in  hock  to  a  mafia  class  the  Merchants. When  Paul  Dean , a  scientist  working  on  a  dangerous  parasite  accidentally  infects  himself he  goes on  the  run to  an  unfriendly remote  town to  hide out  while  he  works  on  a  cure. There  he  has  to  contend  with  hostile scavengers  and  a  ruthless  assassin  on  his  tail. As  a  film,  it's  not  appalling  but  it's  too  ambitious  for  its  budget,  relying  on  a  few  cheap  laser  effects to   suggest  the  future  and  the  continuity  is  suspect.

Demi  Moore  ( as  Pat  Welles )

This  was  Demi's  second  film  and  she  has  descibed  it  as  the  worst she's  been  in. Certainly  her  character  seems  out  of  place   and  doesn't  make  a great  deal  of  sense. Demi  started  out  as a  model  while  helping first  husband,  singer   Freddy  Moore  with  his  band. After  a  stint  on  the  soap  General  Hospital  she  became  associated  with  the  "brat pack"  and  raised  her  profile  in  St  Elmo's  Fire  and  About Last Night. Ghost made  her  a  superstar  in  the  nineties  though  she  attracted  criticism  for  her  avarice  and  exhibitionism. She  also  made  some  poor  choices  such  as  Striptease  and  GI  Jane  which  diminished  her  box  office  appeal  although  Charlie's  Angels : Full  Throttle  stabilised  her  career.  She  remains  a  big  star  although  hs  done  more  TV  work  in  recent  years.

Cherie  Currie ( as  Dayna )

This  was  Cherie's  second  film  role  since  leaving  The  Runaways  and  becoming  an  actress.  By  the  beginning  of  the  nineties  drugs  had  derailed  her  career  although  she  eventually  got  clean  and  worked  as  a  drug  counselor.  and  personal  fitness  trainer.  She  also  became  a  chainsaw  artist. She  last  appeared  in  a film  in  2013.

Joanelle  Romero ( as Bo )

Joanelle  is  a  Native  American  actress  and  singer  who  was  adopted  by  Dennis  Hopper  and  later  dated  Leonard  Cohen. This  was  her  second  film. Most  of  her  subsequent  acting  work  was  on  TV. Since  2000,  activism   and  documentary- making  on  behalf  of  Native  American  women  has  taken  up  most  of  her  time.

Cheryl  Smith ( as  Captive  girl )

Cheryl  was  born  in Los  Angeles. As  a  teen  she  hung  around  musicians  at  the  Rainbow  Club  and  acquired  the  nickname  "Rainbeaux " ( in  many  of  her  earlier films  she's  credited  as  Rainbeaux  Smith).  She  regularly  appeared  in  exploitation  pictures  , including  Caged  Heat, in  the  seventies  and  nearly  joined  The  Runaways  at  the  end  of  the  decade. By  this  point  heroin  addiction  had  taken  its  toll and  she  only  appeared  in  two  more  films. She  worked  sporadically  as  a  graphic  artist  afer  that  and  served  two  prison  terms. She died  in  2002  of  liver  disease  and hepatitis.

    

472 Death Valley ( 1982 )

 This  is  fairly  tame  to  be  categorised  as   a  slasher  and  has  a  TV  movie feel  to  it  but  it's  worth  watching. Milky  Bar  kid  lookalike  Billy  is  packed  off  to  Arizona  to  stay  with  his  mum  and  her  new  boyfriend.  Bored, he  wanders  into  an  abandoned  RV  without  realising  its  the  scene  of  the  latest  murders  by  a  serial  killer  and  picks  up  some  incriminating  evidence.

Catherine  Hicks  ( as Sally )

Catherine's  acting  career  began  with  a  long  run on  Ryan's  Hope  in  the  late  seventies.  She  won  an  Emmy  for playing  Marilyn  Monroe in  the TV  movie Marilyn: The  Untold  Story  then  this  was  her  first  film  role. She  had  her  biggest  film  parts in  the  eighties  notably  in  Star  Trek: The  Voyage  Home  but  dropped  back  into  TV  in  the  nineties. She  was  the  female  lead  in  the  series  7th  Heaven for  eleven  years   from  1996  which  precluded  other  work. She  hasn't  any  post-Covid  appearances.

471 Madman (1982)

   This  slasher  is  another in  the  Friday  the  13th  vein  with  a  group  of  camp  counselors   ( who  outnumber  the  kids  )  terrorised  by Madman  Marz  a  mad  farmer with  an  axe. It  scores  very  low  on  originality  and  acting but  it  is  pretty  well  made  with  pace  and  well-timed  shocks.

Gaylen Ross ( as  Betsy )

Sex : Betsy  has  sex  in  a  jacuzzi  wwith  her  boyfriend

Death : Betsy  is  impaled on  a  coat  hook but  may  have  survived  long  enough  to  perish in  a  fire

470 Ghost Story ( 1981 )

 This  doesn't  seem  too  promising  a  premise with  its  four  leading  men  all  of  pensionable  age   swapping  ghost  stories in  their  exclusive  Chowder Club. It  is  however  a  very  absorbing and  atmospheric  film  with  a  mesmerising  performance  from  its  leading  lady. Craig  Wasson plays  Don  who  returns  to  the  small  town  where  his  father  is  Mayor  for  rhe  funeral  of  his  brother  who  died  in  mysterious  circumstances. When  his  father  dies shortly  afterwards,  Don  joins  the  Club  to  tell  the  three  surviving  members of  his  own  supernatural  experience  which  forces  them  to  confront their  murky  past.

Alice Krige  ( as Eva/Alma)

Sex : Eva  went  to  bed  with  Don's  father  but  he couldn't  get  it  up. Alma  sleeps  with  both  of  his  sons.

Death : Eva  drowns  in  a  lake  when  she  is  mistaken  for  dead  and  dumped  there  in  a  car. Alma  is  her  ghost.

Alice  was  born  and  brought  up  in  South  Africa  but  moved  to  England  for  more  acting  opportunities. This  was  her  second  film  role  after  Chariots  of  Fire. While  not  making  her  a  huge  star, she  has  never  been  out  of  work  since  and  gained  a  new  audience  through  her  role  as  The  Borg  Queen  in  Star Trek : First  Contact. Her career  is  ongoing.

469 The Prowler ( 1981)

 This  slasher has  its  moments  courtesy  of  horror  FX  guru  Tom  Savini  but  there's  a  lot  of  padding  and  the  storyline  is  incoherent. The  revelation  of  the  killer  raises  more  questions  than  it  answers. The  first  kill  occurs  in  1945  when  a  girl  and  her  lover are  murdered  at  a  graduation  ball  seemingly  by  a  returning  GI  she  has  abandoned. Thirty-five  years , some  students  start  being  murdered  by  a  man  wearing  WWII  combat  gear. The  two  events  are  connected  but  the  film  never  convincingly  explains  how.

468 Halloween II ( 1981)

 John  Carpenter's  sequel  continues  exactly  from where  the  original  left  off  with Jamie  Lee  Curtis, Donald  Pleasence, Charles  Cyphers  and  Nancy  Stephens  all  returning  to  their  roles  although  the  guy  playing  Michael  Myers - who  has  much  more  screen  time - is  clearly  not  the  same  one. A  storyline  about Laurie  being  Myers' sister adds  a  bit of  meat  to  the skeletal  plot  but  viewing  the  film  is  really  just  a  matter  of  seeing  how  Michael  manages  to  despatch  those  who  get  between  him and  his  quarry.

Jamie  Lee  Curtis  ( as  Laurie )

467 The Pit ( 1981)

 This  Canadian  shocker  is  oddly  structured - the main antagonist  is entirely  absent  from the  climax - and  somewhat  uneven  in  tone  but good  etertainment  all  the  same. Jamie  is  a  12 year  old ( though  the  actor  looks  older )  autistic  and  bullied  loner  with  an  unhealthy  fixation  on  his  young  babysitter. He  discovers  a  pod  of  troglodytes  living  in  a  deep  unfenced  hole in  the  woods. When  he  runs  out  of  money  to  feed  them  meat  frm  the  butcher, he  starts  leading  his  enemies  into  the  woods.

Jeannie Elias ( as Sandy )

466 Galaxy of Terror ( 1981)

 This  Roger  Corman  sci-fi  horror  has  certain  similarities to  Alien  and  features James  Cameron' s  work  as  Production Designer. A  space  crew  are  sent  on  a  rescue  mission  to  a  distant  planet  by  a  god-like  being  known  as  The  Master. When  they  get  there  all  manner  of  nasty  things  start  hapening  to  them. For much of  the  time it  seems  like an  incoherent  mess  with  Corman  raiding  the  props  cupboard for  his  monsters  but it  does  eventually  tie  the  threads  together.

Erin  Moran ( as  Aluma )

Erin  was a  successful  child  actress  from  the  late  sixties  onwards  and in  1974  landed  the  career-defining  role  of  Joanie  Cunningham  in  Happy  Days  and  its  unloved spin-off  Joanie Loves Chachi. After  the  series  finished, her  appearances  were  sporadic  and  she  suffered  with  depression  and  substance  abuse. By  2010, she  was  living  in  a  trailer  park. She  died  of  throat  cancer  in  2017  aged 56.

Taaffe  O  Connell ( as Dameia )

Taaffe  was  mainly  a  TV  actress  doing  guest  appearances  as  a  sexy  blonde. In  the  nineties  she  turned  her  attention  to  publishing  with  the  trade  paper  Astro  Caster  Magazine   and   her  own  appearances  became  rarer, the  last  being  in 2011. 

465 The Evil Dead (1981)

 Sam  Raimi's   directorial  debut  became  one  of  the  most  notorious  video  nasties   and  made  his  name  as  a  horror  auteur. the  gore  and  violence  is  so  over  the  top  that  the  film is  sometimes  referred  to  as  a  comedy. It's  hard  to  imagine  anyone  chuckling  at  this  except  for  misogynists applauding  the  amount  of  male vs  female  violence on  screen.

A  group  of  old-ish  students  rent  a  rather  ramshackle  log  cabin  for  the  weekend, When  the  cellar  door  flings  itself  open  they  find  an  occult  book  and  a  tape  recording  of  an  incantation. When  they  let  it  play,  an  evil  force  is  let  loose  which  takes  posssession  of  the  three  women  in  the  group. There's  little  pretence  of  a  plot  beyond  that,  just  a  relentless  barrage  of  grisly  violence , the  only  light  relief  coming  from  the often  ropey  special  effects.

This  was  Ellen's  full  length  film  debut  after  appearing  in  Raimi's  short  to  raise  funds  for  the  project. She  then  disappears  for  25  years  before  resurfacing  in  2006. Her  subsequent  work  is  mainly  tied  to  the  Evil  Dead  franchise.

Betsy  had  done  a  couple  of  TV  movies  before  this . From  1990  she  too  took  a  long  break  to  raise  a  family  but  returned  to  acting, mainly  on  TV  in  2007  and  has  been  extremely  busy  ever  since.

This  was  Theresa's  first  film  role  and  the  only  one  where  she  iused  the  stage  name  Sarah  York. Her  appearances in  the  eighties  and  nineties were  few  and  far  between but  she  has  been  more  active  since  the  millennium  often  appearing  in  the  same  projects  as  her  co-stars  here.

464 Just Before Dawn ( 1981)

 George  Kennedy  adds  some  star  power  to  this   superior  slasher  about  five  campers  who  ignore  his  warnings  about  camping  in  the  woods  The  film  owes  much  to  The  Texas  Chainsaw  Massacre  and  The  Hills  Have  Eyes  and  the  Scooby  Doo  twist  halfway  through  doesn't  cover  up  all  the  plot  holes  but  it's  still  well-paced , surprisingly  grisly  in  parts  and  enertaining,

Deborah already  had  a  few  films  under  her  belt  before  this  and  looked  set  for  stardom but  it  didn't  happen  and  she  was  playing  minor  parts in  Knots  Landing  and  Falcon  Crest  just  a  few  years  later. She  initially  gave  up  in  1992  but  made  a  brief  comeback  in  a  couple  of  TV series  in 2010-11.

Jamie  Rose ( as Megan )

Sex : Megan  frolics  topless  in  a  lake  with  her  boyfriend  then  is  felt  up  by  a  retard hiding  in  the  lake. ( His  ability  to  enter  and  exit  the  lake  and  spend  a  considerable  time  under  the  surface  unnoticed   is  the  film's  most  obvious  plothole ).

This  was  Jamie's  first  film  role  after  a  couple  of  TV  movies. Straight  after it,  she  secured  a  regular  role  in  Falcon  Crest  and  her  career  was  evenly  split between  B-movies  and  TV  worrk  thereafter. She  is  an  acting  coach  with  ther  own  studio in  L.A. but  hasn't  made  a  screen  appearance  herself  since 2016.

Katie  Powell ( as Merry  Cat )
