176 Jack The Ripper ( 1959 )

This  British  film  about  London's  most  infamous  serial  killer  broke  new  ground  in  the  graphic  presentation  of  murder  and  the  display  of  female  flesh  five  years  before  Hollywood's  The  Pawnbroker.  

This  version  is  loosely  based  on  Leonard  Matters's  book  The  Mystery  Of  Jack  The  Ripper  which  theorised  that  the  Ripper  was  a  doctor,  avenging  the  death  of  his  son  through  consorting  with  prostitutes. For  the  purposes  of  getting  the  film  made, the  investigators  were  played  by  Americans  Lee  Patterson  and  Eddie  Byrne  and  the  victims  were  fictionalised  to  make  the  prostitution  angle  less  obvious. Dads'  Army's  John  le  Mesurier  is  the  best  performer  here  as  a  grumpy  doctor.

Betty  was  born  in  Sydney  but  made  her  name  in  British  TV  in  the  fifties  and  early  sixties. She  retired  at  the  end  of  the  seventies  and  died  in  London  in  1993  aged  69.

This  was  the  last  of  six  films  made  by  this  little  known   Birmingham-born  actress  who  may  still  be  alive .


Anne  Sharp  ( as  Helen  Morris )

Anne  was  the  wife  of   the  film's   producer  Monty  Berman. She  was  no  more than  a  bit  part  actress  in  films  and  is  best  remembered  as  Nicola  Harvester  in  Jason  King. She  retired  in  the  early  seventies  and  died  in  2010  aged  76.

Marianne  Stone  ( as  Drunken  Woman )

Marianne  was  a  British  bit  part  actress  who  pops  up  all  over  the  place  in  a  career  that  spanned  over  40  years. She died  in  2009  aged  87.

Jane  Taylor  ( as  Hazel )

Jane  is  the  first  of  our  girls  to  bare  a  boob  but  I  can't  tell  you  much  about  her. This  was  the  first  of  her  two  films.

Dorinda  Stevens  ( as  Margaret )

Sex : Margaret  has  a  consensual  grope   with  a  customer  during  which  a  boob  may  be  exposed  - it's  hard  to  tell  for  sure

Dorinda  was  from  Southampton  and  had  a  reasonable  career  in  British  film  and  TV  in  the  fifties  and  early  sixties. She  died  in  2012  from  a  stroke  aged  80.
