This was Hammer's second horror offering. It was intended to be a second Quatermass film but Kneale refused them permission to use his character.
Instead, Dean Jagger plays Dr Royston , a scientist specialising in radiation who has to combat a mobile being from the centre of the earth that seeks out radioactive material and fries anyone in the vicinity. The film has a high mortality rate and decent effects but neither prevent it being rather dull and ponderous compared to its predecessor.

Marianne was an Austrian actress active in the fifties including a short run in hospital soap Emergency -Ward 10. She's thought to be still alive aged 98.
