153 The Haunted Strangler ( 1958 )

This  film  has  the  same  director, star  and  Victorian  setting  as  Corridors  of  Blood  but  isn't  as  good.

Boris  Karloff  is  a  crime  novelist  Jim  Rankin  who  also  dabbles  in  social  reform  and  sets  out  to  prove  that  the  man  executed  for  the  Haymarket  Strangler  murders  wasn't  the  one  responsible. Unfortunately  his  investigations  turn  the  spotlight  on  himself  and  from  that  point  on  the  plot  goes  haywire  with  a  high  body  count  trying  to  divert  attention  away  from  the  illogicality  of  the  story.

Jean  Kent   ( as  Cora  Seth )

Sex : Cora  works  in  a  seedy  club  and  appears  in  her  underwear

Death :  Survives

Jean  was  originally  Joan  Summerfield  from  Brixton. She  was  a  former  dancer  who  made  her  mark  in  the  British  film  Fanny  by  Gaslight  in  1945. Her  star  was  dimming  by  this  point  although  she  worked  in  TV  down  to  the  early  nineties. She  died  in  2013  aged  92.

Vera  Day  ( as  Pearl )

Sex : Pearl  displays  an  impressive  cleavage  throughout  although  her head's  not  in  shot  when  a  drink  is  poured  down  it.

Death : Strangled  then  stabbed  by  Rankin

Vera  gives  Barbara  Windsor  a  run for  her  money  as  a  busty  Cockney  in  this  one.

Diane  Aubrey  ( as Lily  Rankin )

Sex : No

Death : Survives

The  18  year  old  was  making  her  film  debut  here  and  it  turned  out  to  be  the  most  significant  of  her  half  dozen  or  so  film  roles. In  1962  she  had  a  season  in  Z  Cars   and  five  years  later   married  its  creator  Troy  Kennedy-Martin  which  curtailed  her  acting  career.  She  later  worked  as  a  physiotherapist. She  is  now  77.

Jessica  Cairns  ( as  Asylum  Maid )

Sex : No

Death : Strangled  and  stabbed  by  Rankin

This was  the  last  film  for  this  obscure  bit  part  actress  who  disappeared  from  view  in  the  early  sixties.

Dorothy  Gordon  ( as  Hannah )

Sex :  No

Death : Survives

Dorothy  had  a  long  career  stretching  from  1943  to  2006  although  it  was  punctuated  by  long  absences  from  film  or  TV screen. She  is  now  93.
