This was Michael Mann's only foray into horror and it was so fraught that it's perhaps not too surprising he hasn't been back. First the special effects guy died befoore completing his work on the film then Paramount drastically cut it down from Mann's nearly three hour original to just over half that length. That shows in the lack of continuity and barely comprehensible narrative. Not that a three hour version is a very inviting prospect with Mann putting visual spectacle above character development.
A troop of Grman soldiers take over a medieval keep in Rumania and unleash a spectral entity which starts killing them, Their humane commander is sidelined by a brutal Nazi (brilliantly played by Gabriel Byrne) and a Jewish professor ( ian McKellen) is brought in to decipher the castle's secrets. An enigmatic stranger Glaeken arrives in town to add to the confusion.
Alberta Watson ( as Ewa)
Sex : Ewa suffers an interrupted rape by a Nazi then has sex with Glaeken.
