I was particularly interested in this one as I was a big fan of Icehouse aka Iva Davies who did the score. This was the directing debut for Russell Mulcahy who cut his teeth on pop videos. The story is standard monster movie fare ; where the film really succeeds is in cutting through the rosy fog of Castlemaine XXXX ads and showing the reality of rural Australia as a sleazy, violent hellhole exemplified by the repellent Baker brothers
Arkie Whiteley ( as Sarah )
Sex : Sarah is surprised while showering outdoors
Death : Survives
Arkie was the daughter of renowned Australian artist Brett Whiteley and had a bohemian childhood. She cut her teeth in Australian TV before getting a good role in Mad Max 2. She took a break from acting after this then relocated to the UK where she had some good TV roles. Her last appearance was in an episode of A Touch Of Frost before her death from adrenal cancer in 2001.
Judy Morris ( as Beth )
Sex : Beth is about to be raped by the Bakers when the monster boar appears
Death : Beth is seized and devoured by the boar
Judy is one of Australia's mosst recognised actresses. Her career started as a child in the late fifties and from 1967 onwards she was an inescapable presence on Australian TV. She made around 20 Aussie films but this was the one that got most attention internationally. In 1989, she wrote and directed Luigi's Ladies which was also her last film in front of the cameras. In 2000 she retired from acting and devoted all her time to writing and directing achieving her greatest success with Happy Feet in 2006.
