248 The Reptile ( 1966 )
This is a good mid-period Hammer shocker that was filmed back to back with Plague of the Zombies. It's good to see Michael Ripper rewarded with a larger and more heroic role than usual. There are a fair few plot holes though.
Harry Spalding ( Ray Barrett ) and his wife inherit a Cornish cottage from his brother Charles who died in mysterious circumstances. Most of the locals are unresponsive to their enquiries and they have an odd neighbour in Dr Franklyn ( Noel Willman ) who maintains a strange household.
Jennifer Daniel ( as Valerie Spalding )
Sex : Amazing cleavage
Death : Survives
Jennifer plays a resourceful heroine in this one.
Jacqueline Pearce ( as Anna Franklyn )
Sex : No
Death : This is one of the plot holes. Anna , in her reptilian form , is almost instantly incapacitated by the cold air coming in from a broken window and then perishes in a house fire. But earlier in the film she's attacked John Laurie's character out in the open at night and visited the Spaldings' home without a coat.
This was the end of Jacqueline's brief dalliance with the horror genre. Her next film role was opposite Jerry Lewis in one of his witless solo movies.
