Another David Cronenberg movie but this is a big leap forward from Shivers and Rabid and not only because he could now attract name actors ( though that certainly helps ). The Brood is tghtly plotted and scripted with the shocks well placed so that each one increases the horror and tension. Bot there's also a more human element to the story ( influenced by Cronenberg's recent divorce ) that gives the film an emotional impact missing from his previous work.
Art Hindle plays Frank, a loving father whose wife is mentally ill and receiving treatment from Dr Shenken ( a restrained Oliver Reed ) in a clinic. His technique is phytoplasmics- basically converting emotional disturbance into ( presumably less distressing ) physical ailments. When applied to Frank's wife this goes spectacularly badly.
Samantha Eggar ( as Nola )
Sex : No
Death : Throttled by her husband
Samantha was born in England and started her career in British TV . She was oscar nominated for The Collector in 1966 and regarded as a rising star.. She relocated to Hollywood but somehow the big roles eluded her and she ended up in horror movies and TV mini-series. She was never out of work though and retired voluntarily in 2012.
Susan Hogan ( as Lisa Meyer )
Sex : No
Death : Hammered to death by mutants ( in a class full of infants )
Susan has had a long career lasting over 50 years without ever getting much attention. She's probably best remembered for the female assassin in Narrow Margin.
Cindy Hinds (as Candice )
Sex : n/a
Death : Survives
Cindy appeared in three other films -all horror - then disappeared. She made a surprise comeback in 2005 with the film For The First Time but hasn't done anything since.
