438 The Shining ( 1980)

 Auteur  Stanley Kubrick  turned  his attention  to  horror  with  this  adatation  of  a  Stephen  King  novel. It's  set  in  a  snowbound  hotel  populated  by  malignant  ghosts  who  play  havoc  with  a  family  unfortunate  enough  to  stay  there. Jack  Nicholson  plays John  Torrance  the  father  who  becomes  murderously  insane  as  a  result  of  his  ghostly  encounters. The  film had  a  largely  negative  reception  from  critics  at  the  time who  felt  that  Kubrick's  art  house  style was  unfitted  to  the  material  but  the  film  has  plenty  of  defenders.

Shelley  was  born  in  Texas  and  aspired  to  become  a  scientist  until  meeting  director  Robert  Altman  at  a  party. Struck  by  her  manic  personality  and  unusual  looks,  he  persuaded  her  to  appear  in  his  film  Brewster  McCloud  and she  appeared in  several  of  his  films  thereafter. She  eventually  started  working with  other  directors  most often  in  comedy  roles. She  retired  in  2002  andbecame  reclusive  prompting  rumours  about  her  mental  health  but  she  has  just  made  a  comeback  in  the  film The  Forest  Hills.

Swiss-born  Lia  was  a  model  rather  than  an  actress  and  this  was  her  only  film  role. She  died  in  2021.

This  was  the  twins' only  film  appearance. Lisa  is  now  a  lawyer  and  Louise is  a  scientist. They  were  recently  in  the  news  when  spotted  in  the  queue  to  pay  respects  to  the  late Queen  Elizabeth II.
